Volunteer Positions Needed for September 18 – 20, 2015

Volunteers can sign up for more than one time slot

  1. Luminary Wardens (50 participants needed per time slot)
  2. Friday, September 18 1:00 – 5:00 pm
  3. Friday, September 18 10:00 pm – midnight
  4. Saturday, September 19 5:00 pm – 7:00 pm
  5. Sunday, September 20 7:00 – 9:00 am

Luminary wardens will be in charge of filling and placing almost 13,000 luminaries in the prison site before 7:00 pm on Friday. This will involve opening bags, lifting and filling sand, placing battery powered tea-lights, and placing filled luminaries on prison field before dark. This task will be repetitive. After 10:00 pm on Friday, each luminary must be turned off by volunteers. This involves bending, and moving around uneven ground after dark. Sunday morning all the luminaries will be picked up and properly disposed of.

  1. “Funeral for 13,000” Ushers(10 participants)
  • Saturday, September 19 11:30 – 3:30 pm

Ushers will assist visitors to their seats, carry chairs, assist with blankets and hand out programs. They should also assist people as they step off buses or shuttles.

Parking assistants will be stationed at various park areas in the park. They will assist with vehicle movement, park directions, visitor assistance and communication with command center about available spaces and lot conditions. Assistants who have a valid driver’s license may drive golf cart shuttles to aid people in getting to various locations

  4. Saturday, September 19 8:00 am – 1:00 pm
  5. Saturday, September 19 1:00 pm – 6:00 pm
  6. Sunday, September 20 8:00 am – 1:00 pm
  7. Sunday, September 20 1:00 pm – 6:00 pm

Water station attendants will be in charge of monitoring, retrieving, filling and returning water coolers to up to 15 locations around the park. This will require use of a radio, and golf cart to facilitate transport. They will also be monitoring cups, and trash levels to ensure the park remains clean. Monitors will need a valid driver’s license.

  1. Junior Ranger Flag Folding Station (Minimum 2 people needed per time slot)
  2. Friday, September 18 8:00 am – 1:00 pm
  3. Friday, September 18 1:00 pm – 6:00 pm
  4. Saturday, September 19 8:00 am – 1:00 pm
  5. Saturday, September 19 1:00 pm – 6:00 pm
  6. Sunday, September 20 8:00 am – 1:00 pm
  7. Sunday, September 20 1:00 pm – 6:00 pm

As part of the Junior Ranger activities, there will be a station behind the National Prisoner of War Museum where kids and families can learn how to properly fold a United States flag. This is an excellent location for Eagle Scouts, veterans or active duty. After each child has the opportunity to fold the flag correctly they earn a wooden token that goes toward earning their Junior Ranger badge.

  2. Friday, September 18 8:00 am – 1:00 pm
  3. Friday, September 18 1:00 pm – 6:00 pm
  4. Saturday, September 19 8:00 am – 1:00 pm
  5. Saturday, September 19 1:00 pm – 6:00 pm
  6. Sunday, September 20 8:00 am – 1:00 pm
  7. Sunday, September 20 1:00 pm – 6:00 pm

This station will involve monitoring the supplies, and showing kids how to make the craft so that they can earn a wooden token that goes toward earning their Junior Ranger badge.

There will be lots to do and duties may change throughout the day to best meet the needs of the event. All position descriptions are subject to change.
