The New Hampshire Railroad Revitalization Association (NHRRA) is a volunteer 501(c)(3) nonprofit, educational and advocacy volunteer organization, whose goals include the restoration of New Hampshire’s passenger rail service and the increased use of rail for freight transport as part of a balanced intermodal transportation system.

NHRRA believes that an improved rail system in New Hampshire will offer NH citizensanother option for their travelneeds and will promoteenhanced economic development in an environmentally beneficial and fuel efficient manner.

Founded in 1992, NHRRA’s initial goal was the preservation of the “Northern Line”, the rail corridor between Concord and Lebanon that was a segment of the last remaining direct north-south link between Boston and Montreal. Goals have since expanded to include analysis and evaluation of all existing and former rail corridors within the state andadvocacy for restoration of passenger and freightservice in those corridors where it is economically viable.

The primary objectives of the Association are to act as:

  1. An advocate for increased use of active rail lines and restoration of viable inactive corridors.
  2. An “amicus curiae” to assist regional planning commissions, state agencies, rail authorities and the NH State Legislature to steer public policy towards sensible rail initiatives.
  3. An educational and informational resource through outreach and presentation to stakeholders including the general public, local businesses and communities.

NHRRA supports the following rail initiatives:

  1. Legislation to provide a secure non-lapsing dedicated funding mechanism for rail projects and studies.
  2. Extension of commuter rail service from Lowell, MA to Nashua, Merrimack, Manchester and Concord, NH.
  3. Restoration of passenger rail service over the Manchester & Lawrence corridor.
  4. Extension of MBTA commuter rail service from Newburyport, MA to Salisbury, Hampton, Portsmouth, NH and Kittery, ME.
  5. Extension of MBTA commuter rail service from Haverhill, MA to Plaistow, NH.
  6. Extension of freight operations between Ossipee and Conway.
  7. Funding support to promote continued operation of the Downeaster between Portland, ME and Boston.
  8. Continued study and funding of the Boston-Montreal High Speed Rail initiative.

(Continued on reverse side)

  1. Expansion of freight and intermodal traffic on existing rail lines throughout the state through increased funding of operations on state-owned rail lines and policy encouragements for all railroads.
  2. Continuation and expansion of our scenic and tourist railroads.
  3. Continuation of NHDOT’s policy of “rail banking” inactive corridors.
  4. Collaborating with other like-minded organizations, planning commissions and environmental advocacy groups who support rail service to help improve air quality and reduce highway congestion.

NHRRA meets monthly and is supported solely by membership dues and sponsor contributions. An elected slate of officers comprises the Executive Committee, which includes the President, the Vice President, the Treasurer, the Secretary and two member Representatives.
