Physics calorimetry lab 85 points

LiangName______

Here we go, yo, here we go, yo, So what’s the what’s the scenario?

Deactivating the Bomb (10 points)

Scenario: Mr. Liang has gone mad, as in crazy. He has developed some kind of bomb device, which is hooked up to a 150 ml beaker full of water at room temperature. He has issued a challenge to your group of physics students:

Deactivate the bomb by adding 50 mL or less of water to raise the temperature of the solution in the beaker to 37 degrees Celsius, a nice human body temperature.

Rules: I will appear with my beaker of death when you are ready to disarm it. You will then proceed to add the necessary water and be graded accordingly

You cannot add more than 50 mL of water, because to do so, would trigger catastrophic events beyond your imagination, meaning you will get docked 1 point for every degree that you are off.

Equipment: ring stand, Bunsen burners, wire gauze, thermometers, tongs, scales, beakers, water. Graduated cylinder,

Hint: plan out and write down the procedure that you will do, you will need it for your lab write up

You should run some test trials with other beakers of water before trying your final trial, which needs to be observed by me for credit.

How Hot is that piece of metal?

Scenario: Never to be thwarted, Liang develops a puzzle challenge for you, given a piece of zinc, copper, and aluminum, weigh and heat each piece for 30 seconds under a Bunsen burner. Develop a way to measure how hot that piece of metal is.

Rules: Don’t touch the metal, it will be hot (common sense, I know, but probably needed to be mentioned)

Don’t try to touch the thermometer to it, it will break the thermometer and your group will owe me a new one.

Hint: Think about what we have been working with and the previous scenario. Your book will probably be necessary

Q=mS(delta)T (useful formula to know

Plan out and write down the procedure that you will do, you will need it for your lab write up

You should do three trials of each metal to insure that you have a good data and average out the final temperature that you calculate.

Stirring can increase the rate to reach your final temperature, do not remove metal from water until there is no noticeable temperature change.

What’s the specific heat of my magical special nails?

Scenario: To ultimately end Liang’s reign of madness, you must figure out the specific heat of his magical, special nails

Rules: none that I can think off, just don’t pester Liang about what the nails are made of.

Hint: You will have to control everything so that the only unknown is the specific heat of nails

Plan out and write down the procedure that you will do, you will need it for your lab write up

Do at least 3 trials to be as accurate as possible, record your data!

Now about that TYPED (hint..hint) lab format…..

Question: What question(s) or problem(s) was posed to you? (5 points)

Procedure(15 points, 5 points for each section): write a detailed procedure of what you did, write it in number or bullet form and not as a paragraph!

Show any necessary calculations you needed to do!

Data(15 points, 5 points for each section): Write down and ORGANIZE your data in the form of a table.

Analysis: Answer the following questions (30 points)

Deactivating the bomb

How off was your group from 32 degrees? How many trial did you perform? What could account for deviations in your trials?

Temp of metal:

Which metal caused the greatest temperature increase in your water? What caused this temperature increase: size of metal, specific heat, etc? Which metal reached the highest temperature under the flame? Was all of the energy transferred from the metal to the water or was some of it lost? Where was this energy lost to?

Special Nails:

So what is the specific heat of my special nails? From this information can you deduce what the magical nails are made of? Explain to me, how you came up with this

Conclusion: (10 points)

What did you learn from this lab? List the human errors committed during this lab (there must have been some, here’s where you can finger point or assume responsibility) List any systematic errors inherent with the lab. If things could be done differently, what could be done to reduce the errors inherent with the lab? What did you think of this lab?
