Lt. John Yunk, Pennsylvania State Police Operations Commander Domestic Security Section, will talk with us about the mental strategies and response tactics to use if we find ourselves involved in an active shooter situation. Topics will include: associated behaviors, thoughts, feelings, triggering events, statistics and trends. Video and audio clips of actual incidents will engage the audience.

Scott R Sutherland,Director of Security at Penn State Health Milton S. Hershey Medical Center will follow with a discussion regarding evaluating the risk that a security event could occur, what it could impact, and how best to respond.

OUR SPEAKERS (bios)

John G. Yunk IIIhas served 23 years with the Pennsylvania State Police (PSP). He currently holds the rank of Lieutenant and is assigned as the Operations Commander for the Domestic Security Section, Intelligence Division, Bureau of Criminal Investigation.

John progressed through the ranks and has served on the Bureau of Drug Law Enforcement, the Bureau of Criminal Investigation, and the Bureau of Forensic Services. He most recently served as the Station Commander, Troop H, Harrisburg. He is the Lead for the PSP Incident Management Team (PSP-IMT), and has served during the Frein manhunt, deployment to the Baltimore City Support Detail, the 2016 Democratic National Convention, and the Papal Visit. Lt. Yunk is also the Incident Commander for all nuclear transports that traverse the Commonwealth and is the lead for PSP’s Nuclear, Biological, and Chemical (NBC) officer program.

John is the recipient of several significant service awards from the Department, and is a member of both the South-Central Task Force and the statewide Pennsylvania Incident Management Team (PA-IMT). He is the lead instructor for Active Shooter training, is a graduate of the University of Pittsburgh, and also graduated from Northwestern University’s Center for Public Safety, School of Police Staff and Command.

Scott R. Sutherland is the Director of Security at Penn State Health Milton S. Hershey Medical Center, and is responsible for the physical security of the Medical Center complex, outpatient facilities and the Penn State College of Medicine.

Before joining the Medical Center, Scott served for more than 25 yearsas a Special Agent with the FBI, handling a broad spectrum of complex criminal, national security and intelligence-based investigations with domestic and global visibility.

Scott is a Commissioned Naval officer, having served in the United States Navy for more than 6 years. He was a Naval Aviator (helicopter pilot SH-3H Sea King), Navy helicopter flight instructor during shore-based operations, and a Division officer in the operations and maintenance departments while deployed aboard aircraft carrier operations.

Scott graduated from the United States Naval Academy with his BS in (Engineering-based) Resource management.

Follow I-81 northbound to Exit 65 [11/15 - Enola/Marysville]. Stay right at exit split toward Enola.

Follow 11/15 southbound and veer right onto Valley Road.

Proceed on Valley Road to the light at B Street. Turn left onto B Street, then turn left onto College Hill Road. The Conference Center will be on the left.

From I-81 SB (Grantville start)

Follow I-81 southbound, crossing the Susquehanna.

Stay right and take Exit 65 [11/15 - Enola/Marysville]. Stay left at exit split toward Enola.

Follow 11/15 southbound and veer right onto Valley Road.

Proceed on Valley Road to the light at B Street. Turn left onto B Street, then turn left onto College Hill Road. The Conference Center will be on the left.

From I-83 NB (York start)

Follow I-83 northbound to Exit 41B - Lemoyne. Stay left at exit split.

At end of ramp, turn left at the light onto Lowther Street.

Proceed on Lowther to light, turning left onto 3rd Street.

Proceed on 3rd Street into Lemoyne. At light, turn right onto Market Street.

Stay left and follow around the curve to the lights. Turn left onto Front Street (11/15) in Wormleysburg.

Proceed northbound on Front Street (11/15). Just past Summerdale Plaza, turn left onto College Hill Road.

Proceed on College Hill Road to the Conference Center on the right.
