New Resources
There are two new posters in the Her Own Words Women in Nontraditional Careers series. The 18" x 24" full-color poster, "Good Career Moves," highlights nine women who work in a variety of jobs that are not traditional for women, including STEM careers.
CVS Caremark Community Grants give funds to nonprofit organizations for programs targeting children with disabilities, programs focusing on health and rehabilitation services, public schools promoting a greater level of inclusion in student activities and extracurricular programs, and initiatives that give greater access to physical movement and play.
YouTube It Gets Better Project: The channel promises to be a collection of videos from adults in the gay community who share their own stories of surviving school bullying and moving on to build successful careers and happy home lives.

Secretary of Labor Hilda L. Solis' Discussion on Fair Pay
Viewers tuned in to a live webcast featuring a discussion between Secretary of Labor Hilda Solis and fair pay advocate Lilly Ledbetter. Ledbetter shared the story of her struggle for justice and she and Secretary Solis stressed the need to pass the Paycheck Fairness Act. "Wage discrimination touches everyone," Ledbetter noted, and emphasized that the bill will "give women courage in the workplace." Learn More
National Women's History Museum
The National Women's History Museum (NWHM) is calling on Senators Tom Coburn (R-OK) and Jim DeMint (R-NC) to lift the hold preventing a vote on the National Women's History Museum Act (S. 2129). The legislation allows the Museum to purchase land on the National Mall to build a permanent home for women's history. NWHM have launched a petition calling on Congress to act on and pass the National Women's History Museum Act immediately. Learn More

Poverty Among Women and Families, 2000-2009: Great Recession Brings Highest Rate in 15 Years

On top of a universal increase in poverty for women, men and children, the wage gap between men and women remained unchanged. Women continued to make just 77 cents on every dollar men earned. Using data from the 2009 Census, the report also revealed that the poverty problem for women is also cross-cutting. Women from all ethnic and racial backgrounds faced worse poverty than their white male counterparts. The poverty rate for single mothers was 38.5 percent. Read More

This briefing analyzez the most recent American Community Survey data from the U.S. Census Bureau, finds that in every state a large number of adult women who live in poverty are not receiving help through benefit programs. Focusing on food stamps, health coverage, and cash assistance, IWPR finds that the rates of adult women in poverty during the recession who are not receiving assistance vary among different public programs and across the states and regions.

Separate and Not Equal? Gender Segregation in the Labor Market and the Gender Wage Gap
Institute for Women's Policy Research
This new briefing paper charts occupational segregation since the early 1970s. Women continue to enter some high paying male-dominated professions, yet overall progress has stalled since 1996. Slowing progress, women continue to dominate professions traditionally done by women, which typically pay less. A few occupations have witnessed a sharp reversal in desegregation.

BLS Publishes Public Comments on Definition of Green Jobs; Sets Forth Definition for Data Collection
In a Federal Register Notice on March 16, 2010, BLS solicited comments on the definition BLS will use in measuring green jobs, the list of industries where green goods or services are classified, or any other aspect of the information provided in the notice. The current notice summarizes the comments received and the BLS response to the comments, and provides the final BLS definition of green jobs for use in data collection. Learn More

California School Sees Big Success with a Language-Free Math Program

At Madison Elementary School almost all of the 870 students are English language learners. Historically, students were performing significantly below grade-level on standardized tests, especially in math. Then, in 2002, the school became a pilot site for ST Math, a computer based supplemental math program that is completely language-independent. The program's visual approach to math instruction is incorporated into self-paced activities that align to state standards and core math textbooks. Read More

Phoebe Prince is loved by her peers. At least, now she is. Hundreds of people have lent their voices to support her on Facebook. Dori Fitzgerald Acevedo added, "I am so glad we are not letting this get swept under the carpet." "This" is what some might call bullicide-suicide by bullying. Before Phoebe Prince hanged herself, she was a new student at South Hadley High School. Phoebe was a newly arrived Irish immigrant, but that doesn't seem to be what ignited the ire of her peers-or her own self-doubt. Instead, Phoebe reportedly dared to date boys whom others thought should be off limits to her. Read More
Cyber-Bullying Linked to Spike in Depression

A study released on September 21 by the National Institutes of Health shows that as bullying has moved beyond the schoolyard and on to Facebook pages, online chat groups and cellphone text messages, its victims are feeling more hopeless and depressed. Read More
