MATTY’S ALL ART
A 200-metre-long mural is being painted on the boundary wall of TIO Traeger Park Oval on Gap Rd.
The Alice Springs Town Council has hired artist Matty Day, who recently worked on the mural on the ANZ bank car park wall in the CBD, to design and paint the mural.
Mr Day says the mural is an opportunity to combine sport and art: “Sport and art are polar opposites to many people.
“To me, they have been the link which gave my life meaning and balance.
“It was 1993, Brett Whitely's painting ‘the Cricket Match’ that inspired that realisation. It has inspired my development for this artwork.”
To capture the movement of eight sports that are performed in the precinct Mr Day will create an artwork using 200 hours of labour, 200 litres of UV resistant paint, 50 aerosol paint cans, 50 handmade stencils, 10 modified sauce bottles, 5 paint brushes and 1 AV projector.
It will feature a panorama of images of all the sports played at the precinct including cricket, football, hockey, tennis, basketball, baseball, skateboarding and swimming.
Mayor Damien Ryan said: “I’m very excited about giving this wall a facelift. This mural is part of an overall upgrade to the park precinct.
“And it’s great that there will be references in the new work to the existing paintings on the boundary wall.”
