Scholarship Opportunities

The Counseling Center receives various scholarship offerings by mail each year. Below are listed those received last year. Normally, these scholarships are repeated annually, with similar deadline dates. Keep in mind, however, that not all of the scholarship information is received each year. Additionally, occasionally other scholarships are received. As changes occur, this listing will be updated. You may receive information regarding these scholarships by checking the vertical file in the counseling center. In the vertical file you will find information and/or applications on the various scholarship opportunities. They are filed alphabetically. Feel free to check the file or with your counselor regularly.

October Deadlines:

Acorn Equality Fund Scholarship – this scholarship is designed to provide academic financial support for gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgender students or the children of gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgender parents. There are two scholarships, on based upon academic performance and need; and the other based upon academics, volunteerism, and advocacy. Scholarships are awarded based upon academic performance and an essay and range from $500 to $2,500. Additional information and applications are available from www.acornequalityfund.com. Deadline: October 3.

USA Funds Access to Education Scholarships – USA Funds awards renewable scholarships to students with financial need. Applicants can be those planning on full-time or part-time college attendance, and who have an annual adjusted gross family income of $35,000 or less. Awards range from $750 to $1500 annually. Additionally, the organization targets 50% of all scholarships to students with a physical disability or of a recognized minority group. Information and applications available after October 1 at www.usafunds.org. .

Outstanding Students of America Scholarship – this scholarship is open to any senior with a GPA of 3.00 and above who is active in community service and school activities. The application requires a one-page essay. Additional information and applications are available at www.outstandingstudentsofamerica.com. Deadline: October 10.

Horatio Alger Scholarship – the Horatio Alger Association of Distinguished Americans seeks to assist students who have demonstrated integrity, perseverance in overcoming adversity, strength of character, financial need, a good academic record, commitment to pursure a college education, and a desire to contribute to society for their scholarship. Applicants must have a minimum 2.00 GPA, involvement in co-curricular and community service activities, and an adjusted gross family income of below $50,000. Students interested in applying must submit an application online at www.horatioalger.org/scholarships.

Coca-Cola Scholars Program – Four-year scholarships ranging from $4000 to $20,000 awarded by the Coca-Cola Company based upon a number of factors, with special emphasis on character, leadership in school, civic, and other extracurricular activities, academic achievement, and motivation to serve and succeed in all endeavors. Paper applications are no longer available. All applicants MUST register online at www.coca-colascholars.org. Deadline: October 31.

Prudential Spirit of Community Award – the American Association of School Administrators offers this $1,000 scholarship to students who have demonstrated outstanding community service over the past year. Additionally, scholarship winners are awarded an all-expense paid trip to Washington, D.C. U-High can only nominate one student, however as many as wish may complete an application and U-High will select one student for nomination.

November Deadlines:

Susan Komen Breast Cancer College Scholarship – This scholarship, worth up to $10,000 is offered to students who have lost a parent to breast cancer and intend to attend a state supported college or university in Illinois. Award is based upon academic achievement, community service, and demonstrated leadership ability. An application, letters of recommendation, and two essays are required. Information and application is available in the Counseling Center or by visiting www.komen.org.

Ron Brown Scholar Program – This national program awards scholarships to academically talented, highly motivated African-American students. The scholarships are worth $10,000 annually for up to $40,000. Applicants must excel academically, show exceptional leadership potential, make an impact on their communities through service to others, and demonstrate financial need. An application, essay, and letters of recommendation must be submitted.

Toyota Community Scholars Program – Toyota offers renewable scholarships ranging from $10,000 to $20,000. U-High can only nominate one student. Applicants must possess an outstanding academic record, be an effective leader, and have a well-documented record of service both within and outside the school setting, and have initiated or be actively involved in a service program addressing a school or community need. Although the deadline for submission is December 1, students interested in being nominated need to obtain an application from the Counseling Center and return by the U-High deadline. U-High Deadline: November 15.

Stokes Educational Scholarship Program – The National Security Agency through this program will pay tuition and book costs at the college of your choice in return for your employment at the NSA for a length of 1½ times the length of study in college. Recipients will attend school full-time the work during the summer for the NSA in areas that are related to their course of study. Applicants must have a minimum 3.00 GPA and 25 ACT score. Applicants may also choose a full-time major at college in any of the following areas: Computer Science, Electrical or Computer Engineering, Languages, or Mathematics. Application must be performed on-line at: www.nsa.gov/careers/students.cfm. Deadline: November 30.

Golden Apple Scholars Program – A pre-service teaching program with up to $28,000 in financial aid for students who plan on teaching as a career. Recipients must finish their bachelor’s degree, obtain an Illinois teaching certificate and teach for five years in an Illinois school of need. Students must be nominated (see your counselor for information) and selection is based upon application, academic performance, personal essays, and three letters of reference. Nominations begin in March of a student’s JUNIOR year in high school. Additional information is available at www.goldenapple.org. Deadline: December 1.

December Deadlines:

SAE Engineering Scholarship Program – The Society of Automotive Engineers offers scholarships from specific universities ranging from $400 to full tuition for students intending to earn a degree in engineering or related science; as well as undesignated scholarships ranging from $1000 to $10,000. Applicants should have earned at 3.5 GPA and meet minimum requirements on the ACT test. Information is available in the Counseling Center or by visiting www.sae.org. Please note that there is a $5.00 processing fee to apply. Deadline: December 1

Illinois Society of Professional Engineers Scholarship – The Illinois Society of Professional Engineers provides two $1000 awards for students pursuing careers in engineering. Applicants must have a GPA of 3.00 or better and minimum ACT scores of 29 in Math and 25 in English. Deadline: December 3.

January Deadlines:

Lambda State Florence A. Cook Recruitment Grant – Presented by the Delta Kappa Gamma Society to women who desire to become teachers, rank in the top 40% of their class and submit application, data, and essay. Award based upon qualifications not need.

Elks “Most Valuable Student” Scholarship – Four-year scholarships are awarded by the Elks National Foundation for financial need, leadership, and scholarship.

Sam Walton Community Scholarship Program – Wal-Mart Corporation sponsors this program that awards two $1,000 scholarships from each Wal-Mart or Sam’s Club. Recipients also are eligible to compete for scholarships up to a total value of $25,000. Selection is based upon financial need, academic record ACT Scores, community/extracurricular involvement, and work experience. Information regarding student eligibility and application requirements can be found at www.walmartfoundation.org. The access code (SWCS) must be used to access this application process. Check in November to apply.

Gates Millennium Scholars Program – Funded by a grant from Bill and Melinda Gates, this scholarship is available to African-American, American Indian/Alaska Native, Asian Pacific Islander-American, or Hispanic American students who have a minimum GPA of 3.30 and have demonstrated leadership abilities through participation in community service, extracurricular or other activities, and meet Federal Pell Grant eligibility criteria. This is a highly competitive process and students are encouraged to submit their nomination packet as early as possible. Deadline: January 12, 2009.

February Deadlines:

Phi Delta Kappa Scholarship for Prospective Educators – This professional organization presents $500 to $5,000 scholarships to students planning on a career in education. Selection criteria is based upon academic standing, an essay, letters of recommendation, school activities, and community activities. Information and applications are available in the Counseling Center or by visiting www.pdkintl.org. Deadline: February 1, 2009.

Nevco Scoreboard Scholar-Athlete Scholarship – The Nevco Company offers scholarships ranging from $500 to $5,000 to scholar-athletes who excel in the classroom and athletic participation, and exhibit leadership and community involvement. A 3.25 minimum GPA and varsity athletic participation are required. An application, an essay, and two letters of recommendation are required.

IAA Foundation Scholarships – The IAA Foundation is awarding several scholarships for students who will major in agriculture, agribusiness, or an agriculture-related course of study in college. These scholarships are awarded on the basis of exceptional scholastic ability and/or financial need. Applicants must be either a member of the Illinois Farm Bureau, spouse or the member’s child. There are six scholarships available to U-High students and they are listed below. Students may apply for as many as they wish, but are limited to receiving one. Applications will be available in December. Additional information is available at www.iaafoundation.org. Deadline: February 4, 2009.

IAA Foundation General Scholarship – Eight $750 scholarships will be awarded. Applicant must be a major in agriculture, agribusiness, or an ag-related field.

Martha J. and Walter J. Wills Scholarship – One $300 scholarship will be awarded. Applicant’s parents must be Illinois Farm Bureau members who live on and operate a farm and must attend Southern Illinois University College of Agriculture majoring in any course except horses, floriculture, or forestry.

William J. Kuhfuss Memorial Scholarship – One $1.200 scholarship will be awarded. Applicant must attend a post-secondary institution in the state of Illinois (including junior colleges and trade schools) and working toward an occupation in an ag-related field. Preference is given to students from an agricultural background.

Greg Carney Scholarship – One or two $750 minimum scholarships will be awarded. Applicants must attend the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and major in agriculture, be actively involved in production agriculture in a family farm operation, and be a current or former 4-H member.

Dale E. Butz Scholarship – One $1,000 scholarship will be awarded. Applicant must have a background in production agriculture that is majoring in agriculture, agribusiness, or an ag-related field. The scholarship is awarded on the basis of scholastic ability and financial need.
