Second Quarter Book Report Options

(Nonfiction)

Cook Book

Review a cookbook. Find a recipe in it that you would like to make. Make it for the class. Write a one to two page paper describing the process of making the recipe. Why did you choose this recipe? Did it have any unique ingredients that were hard to find? Did you make any errors? Did you make any adjustments? Did you enjoy making the recipe? Did you have any taste-testers? If so, did they like the final product? Would you make this recipe again?

Historical Fiction

Read a NONFICTION book about historical events. Then, write a historical fiction short story surrounding those events. You should create a fictionalized character who was involved with the real-life events and/or people, such as in The Watson’s Go to Birmingham- 1963 or Elijah of Buxton. Your story should be at least 2 pages and include a lot of details about the events that really occurred, displaying your understanding of the nonfiction work that you read.

Read a NONFICTION book on any subject or product and create an advertising poster. Your poster should include techniques of persuasion, which we will be learning in class. (See Ms. Fichtner for a list with descriptions, if you’re ready to get started before we go over them.) Your advertising poster should display your understanding of what you read and tell the reader a lot about your nonfiction book.

Yearbook Entry

Read a biography or autobiography and create a yearbook entry for the person whose life you read about. Imagine what your person would have been like in high school. Cut out from a magazine, or print from the web, a picture or several pictures of the person. Glue the picture(s) onto a page and under the photo(s) place the following information which you will know from what you read or create based on what you learned about the person: nickname, activities, clubs, and/or sports they may have been in; class mock award such as “class clown”; quotations that shows something about the person and what is important to him or her; favorites such as colors or foods; a book that has had a great impact on him or her; voted “most-likely-to” what?; plans after high school.

Diary Entry

Read a biography or autobiography and create a diary entry that the person you read about might have written. Your diary entry should be at least 1 page typed or 2 pages hand-written. The entry should include a lot of details from the book that you read, showing your understanding of what was read and giving your reader a lot of information about this person’s life.

Scrapbook or Diorama

Read a NONFICTION book on any subject, such as sports, fashion, or music. Think about all the kinds of mementos you would put in a scrapbook or diorama that would relate to what you have read. Then create a scrapbook page by cutting out pictures from magazines or drawing mementos relating to your subject and what you have read OR create a diorama by finding 3-D items that you can glue into a shoebox or other small box. Write one page describing the items on your scrapbook page or in the diorama and how this shows that you gained an understanding of your subject matter by the book you read.
