INTERMEDIATE BLUE MONTHLY TEAM UPDATE

June 2011

Notes & INFORMATION

The Blue Department Staff thanks you for a wonderful year and wishes all students and their families a great summer!

The supply lists for the 2011-2012 school year will be posted on Springer’s website in June.

STUDENT COUNCIL ended the year with a bang! We had our year end “Rock “N Roll” social, followed by providing structured games at the Cincinnati Sports Club/All-School Outing. Congratulations to our 2011/2012 Officers: Michael Kasper, Emily Toles, Luke Tatman, Devon McClea, Morgan Reifsteck, Ashley Suttner, John Schaller, Malakai Graham, Ehmet Thornton-Ayres, Ricci Sena, Alex Stevie, Austin Abbott and L. J. Hogue, and our 2011/2012 President, Marissa Vando.

Last days of school

For students transitioning from Springer to a new school next year, the last day of school is Thursday, June 2nd. These students are not to attend school on June 3rd as activities that day are planned to meet the needs of returning students.

For students returning to Springer next year, the last day of school is Friday, June 3rd. Springer will be providing lunch and drinks for all returning students. Please note that the student’s dismissal is at 2:00pm. Only the following buses will provide pickup service at 2:00pm: Cincinnati Public (1st Student), Forest Hills, Lakota, and Loveland. Students riding buses not mentioned above need to be picked up by car.

Instruction is in place through 12:00pm on Thursday, June 2nd. All students and staff attend the Commencement Dress Rehearsal on the afternoon of the 2nd. They view the graduate slide show and listen to the graduates’ speeches. This provides closure for all. On June 3rd returning students participate in a variety of experiences to celebrate their hard work and to help them look forward to the new year. Children benefit from these opportunities to work through transitions.

Medication

If you sent in prescription OR non-prescription medication (Tylenol, Tums, etc.) for your child this year and wish to pick up any leftover medications, we ask that you do so no later than June 3rd. Medication left at school after that date will be discarded. For the safety of our students, we do not allow them to carry leftover medication home. If you have questions about this, please call Sue Belanger at 871-6080 x210.

Lost & Found

If your child is missing clothing, lunch bags, coats, etc. please have them check the Lost & Found (located in the cafeteria) before leaving school for the summer. Parents are also welcome to stop by and check for missing items. Lost & Found items not claimed by June 3rd will be donated to charity. Thank you.

Summer Learning

Thank you in advance for supporting your child's learning over the summer. Without summer practice and integration of skills learned during the school year, skills will decline. Two websites that can be of help in either selecting appropriate reading material or identifying educational games are those of the American Library Association and MindWare. The later - www.mindwareonline.com features educational games and materials that have been teacher tested and that have won "Parent Choice" awards.

It is critical that parents provide modeling of the real life connections with math, reading and writing through day to day experiences. Guided practice in using these skills is essential. While teachers have made recommendations for summer work and will send home suggestion, parents' implementation and support are the keys to maintaining skills.

No matter what the age of the child please take time to read to him or her - even middle school students benefit from hearing a parent read and comment on an interesting news article or a novel they are reading. Car trips provide great math calculation opportunities for distance traveled, miles per gallon, etc. Journaling about summer experiences or writing thank you notes for birthday gifts keeps writing skills sharp.

We hope your family has a wonderfully enriching summer.
