Outdoor First Aid

Covering the situation where help is at least 24 hours away; many practical scenarios. Minimum age 16 years. Participants must attend the whole course to obtain a certificate.

Two-day Full Course

OUTC Outdoor First Aid Course

Organised specifically for OUTC members. Course will be held during second semester and will depend on numbers. Contact Peter Wilson if interested.

Avalanche Awareness

An essential course for all snow users, it covers avalanche classification, dynamics, mountain weather, snow crystals, snow pack analysis, avalanche terrain, route finding, search and rescue and safety equipment. These topics are studied in greater depth on the Field Days. Avalanche equipment will be provided and is included in the course fee. Food, transport and accommodation not provided.
Weekend course at Remarkables & Coronet Peak. Evening session in Dunedin.
$75 for everything, $5 for the evening session
27-28 August /

Alpine, Beginnings

An introduction for trampers getting into snow and those new to climbing. The course will be 2 separate days on the mountain and includes moving on snow with and without crampons, ice axe use, self-arrest and step cutting. Food, transport and accommodation not provided.
$70 ($60 if completed previous course) + gear hire. Gear required: Transceiver, ice axe, crampons, helmet, shovel, probe
3-4 September /

Alpine, Shelters

The bulk of the time will be spent on constructing various types of snow shelters, while brushing up on what has been previously learned. You will sleep in your snow shelter. Food and transport not included.
$70 ($60 if completed previous courses) + gear hire. Gear required: Transceiver, ice axe, crampons, helmet, shovel, probe
24-25 Sept /

Alpine, Ropes and Anchors

This is an extension of the previous courses, on steeper terrain, building a snow shelter for the night. You will learn about and use knots, ropes, belays, anchors, route finding and how to deal with emergencies. Food and transport not included.
$100 ($90 if completed previous courses) + gear hire
Gear required: Transceiver, ice axe, crampons, helmet, shovel, probe, harness, snow anchors, screw gate karabiners
8-9 October /

Alpine, The Real Experience

Your reward to completing the whole course – a climbing weekend, putting into practice all that you learned. Food and transport not included. Venue weather dependent.
$100 ($90*) + gear hire. Gear required: Transceiver, ice axe, crampons, helmet, shovel, probe, harness, snow anchors, screw gate karabiners

The Famous All Inclusive OUTC Snowcraft Course

Snowcraft run by OUTC members for OUTC members. Course will include the basics of crampon and ice-axe usage on snow covered ground, avalanche awareness, transceiver basics, and rope skills for glacier travel and pitching on steep terrain. The emphasis will be on practical learning in a mountain environment, and may include a climb of an easy peak. Course details to come and venue to be arranged. Contact Peter Wilson if interested.

Please note that most of these courses are not run by the Otago University Tramping Club. Participants will need to make their own bookings through the MSC. The OUTC may be able to provide assistance with transportation, especially if a large group of people are attending. Subsidies on these courses are available for those people intending to take a leadership role in the club. Contact Peter Wilson for further details.
