Project Overview

Project Name: Transportation Level: 4

Final Project/Culminating Activity: Students use the metro transit website to find information to plan a trip from their home to school.

Objectives:

  • I can use the Metro transit website to find specific transportation schedules and information.
  • I can ask for a give transportation info.
  • I know the Metro Transit rules

Begin with a pre-unit Self-Evaluation:

There is a pre- self-evaluation to be used before the unit. It is also the same for a post-self evaluation after students have done the activities in the unit and the culminating activity.

Rubric: The rubric on this unit is for objectives from the lessons, rather than just the culminating activity .

Transportation Survey and Graph

Warm Up

  • Discuss different types of transportation and classify them as public or private
  • Review words of frequency that will be used in the graph

Activities

  • Hand out the Transportation Survey and Graph
  • Look at the survey and have them put their own answer in the first line of the grid.
  • Count the number of people in the class. This is how many responses the students must have, including their own response.
  • Model the question/answer and how to fill out the chart, including, “Can you spell your name?”

Wrap Up and Extension

  • Students share their sentences with their partner or the class.
  • Use the information on the graph to make dictation sentences
  • Use Excel to recreate the graph

Transportation Video: How to Ride the Light Rail

Warm Up

  • As a class do a KWL chart about the light rail:

What Do You Know? / What Do You Want to Know? / What Did You Learn?
  • Learn/review vocabulary words that are in the video

Activity

To use video: Open applications, look for VLR icon (it looks like an orange road cone) drag to dock, insert CD, drag video icon to VLR icon in dock, it should begin.)

  • Watch the video in small parts.
  • Stop the video and have students talk with their partners about what they heard and saw.
  • Then, share with the whole group.
  • Hand out the Activity sheet.
  • Watch the video a few more times, stopping as needed so students can fill in the words.
  • Correct the work together and go over new vocabulary. Have students read the activity sheet to their partner.

Extension:

  • Dialogue strips at the end of this document
  • Metro Transit Customer Advocates can come and talk with your group about using the transit system.

The light-rail line runs from Mall of America in Bloomington

to Target Field Station in downtown Minneapolis.

Train service is available approximately every seven minutes during rush hours

and every ten to fifteen minutes at other times.

The fare for light rail is the same as a local bus route.

Make it easy and use a Go-To Card to pay your fare.

Don't forget to touch your Go-To Card at a reader to validate your ride.

Otherwise, be sure to purchase a ticket at the ticket machine before you board.

at metrotransit.org, or by calling 612-373-3333!

Warm-Up

  • Discuss what kinds of conversations happen between strangers while waiting for the train or bus
  • Have partners talk about what people do if they are at the train/bus stop and they don’t have the info. They need to get where they are going.

Activity

  • Have them order the strips and then check their answers with another pair.
  • The teacher reads the dialogue and students check their work
  • Students practice and then some pairs demonstrate the dialogue
  • Extension: Have students create and demonstrate their own dialogue related to using the light rail.

  • This is an internet based activity
  • Students can work alone or in pairs

  • Since this is the culminating activity, consider letting students mainly work with minimal teacher instruction.
  • Again depending on the group, you may want to read over and discuss the directions as a group.
