Senior Football

Our Senior team failed to make the play-offs but this was not for want of effort from the players or team Managers Michael Sloan or his selectors Mike O’Reilly, Brendan Reilly and Ciaran McCabe. Their quest for honors went down to the last game where they were beaten by Monaghan. Our many thanks to the Players, Managers and Selectors.

Ladies Football

The Cavan Ladies did not make it to the Sean Faherty Championship final this year having been beaten by Na Fianna in the semi-final. However, the building effort for next year has begun already and they hope to be back in 2015.

The Ladies will hold their 23rd annual dinner dance on Saturday, November 29th in Maestro’s Caterers in the Bronx. This year’s Guest of Honors will be Division 3 Feile Champions, with Keelan McLaughlin of Crana Electric receiving the Collette Horkan Memorial Award. Crana Electric came onboard this year as the main sponsor of the New York Ladies team.

Junior Football

2014 proved to be a great year for our Junior team as they won the New York Junior Championship for the first time since 1979. They also won the league. Congratulations to Manager Ciaran Shields, his selectors, Mike Reilly, Ciaran McCabe, Michael Smith, Phil Reilly and the following panel of players:

Paddy Smyth – Meath Francy O’Rourke – Leitrim

Eoin Ward – Leitrim

Colm McGinn – Down

After a strong showing in the round robin where they only lost two games Cavan faced a formidable team in Westmeath in the semi-final. After a hard fought encounter Cavan ran out winners by 3-8 to

1-6, so the scene was set for a great final against a strongly fancied Longford team. But this Cavan team was up to the task and despite losing two key players to injury early (Owen Ward and Eoin McPhillips) they ran out winners 3-8 to 0-12. Man of the Match was Lacken native and son of the great Jimmy Galligan, James Galligan who gave a master class in midfield play. So congrats to all, our first Junior Championship since the days of Rehill, Denneny, Sheridan, Moynagh, McKiernan, Duggan, the late Sean Leddy and Sean Smyth, whom your prayers are asked for as he is recovering from a bone marrow transplant. We wish him well.

Boxing Night

The Club held a boxing night in St. Mary’s Church Gym, in Woodside on June 14th, which proved to be a very successful night. Thanks to all the boxers, refs and all the organizers who did a great job under the Chairmanship of Phil Reilly. Thanks again Phil for a great night.

Golf

Our Golf outing remembering Peter McKiernan took place in Van Cortlandt Park Golf Course on June 22nd. The overall winner was Ballymachugh native Kenin Denneny. Well done Kevin. This event was chaired by Philip Sheridan who again did a great job in getting golfers and sponsors on board. Thanks again Philip for a job well done.

New York Ladies

Last but not least we should mention the New York Ladies who gave such a great account of themselves in the All-Ireland Junior Ladies final in Croke Park. After easily defeating Derry in the semi-final they turned up in Croke Park on September 28th with high hopes but just fell short mainly due to the exploits of the Wexford goalkeeper Mary Rose Kelly who made many great saves.

The New York Ladies Board is chaired by Rosie O’Reilly Broderick, team co-Manager and there were 11 Cavan Club members on the New York Panel: Nora Kilkenny, Aoife O’Rourke, Catriona Raftery, Caitlin Hynes, Ciara Scally, Alisha Jordan, Emma Clarke, Niamh Walsh, Mairead Ruane, Kelly Donoghue and Rosie O’Reilly-Broderick.

Again Ladies you did us proud!
