“Every child has the right to an education.”

  • Trips are regularly planned to enhance teaching and learning and are always linked to class work. They are a wonderful opportunity for pupils to enjoy themselves as they learn in a different environment. Kirkhill welcomesand appreciates our parents whovolunteer with trip supervision.

Article 29 (goals of education)

“Education must develop every child’s personality, talents and abilities to the full.”

  • Pupils maybe taken outwithschool to participate inactivities,events, showcase their talent, enter competitions etc.
  • Office staff keep a list of disclosed parent volunteers. Only parents on this list can accompany pupils on trips.
  • Pupil safety is a priority at all times. Please consider this in all activities. If you have any concerns regarding Health and Safety, please see the class teacher immediately. They will assist you.
  • A full Risk Assessment, in line with East Renfrewshire’s Health and Safety Regulations, is carried out by the Stage Manager inconsultation with the class teacher before a trip is booked.All medical concerns are also noted.
  • Mrs Donaldson must always approve all school trips.
  • Parents of pupils going on the trip are informed by means of a letter which will give all the necessary information(venue, date, duration of trip, dress code, mode of transport, lunch arrangements and cost,if applicable).
  • Parents must give written permission for their child to participate in a trip and complete an Appendix 4a or 4b, recordingtheir child’s medical information and emergency contact details.
  • Class teachers are responsible for taking copies of all paperwork and for leaving a copy with the school office. If something should happen to the class teacher during the trip, the parent helper takes up overall responsibility and should contact the school immediately.
  • Teachers will always ensure medicines are taken on trips and a First Aid Box is carried.
  • On the day of the trip, parent volunteers should report to the school office ten minutes prior to departure.
  • Class teachers will always explain the role of a parent volunteer to her/him and give advice regarding trip (Itinerary, lining up, counting pupils, lunch & toilet arrangementsetc). Please ensure you are given this information by the teacher at the start of the trip. Please ask the teacher if he/she doesn’t provide it. For the journey, whether by foot or coach, please ask the teacher where they would like you to position yourself. (For example, at the back/ middle of the busor at the pavement edge if walking etc.)
  • The class teacher and parent helper should take their own mobile phones for use in an emergency.
  • Parent volunteers should dress appropriate to the activity/weather.
  • It is the responsibility of the class teacher to take photographs. Photographs may be uploaded on to GLOW (with Parental Permission) to be shared with parents. At no time will photographs be taken by school volunteers and/ or shared on Social Media.

Child Protection

“The best interests of the child must be a top priority in all actions concerning children.”

  • If while you are on duty as a volunteer a child tells you something which you are concerned about, or you notice something that concerns you about the child or their behaviour, as with all staff in the school, please pass on to Mrs Donaldson, Mrs Menzies or Mrs McRobb before you leave the school. If a child asks to tell you a secret, please say that they can tell you but you may have to tell their teacher. Please refer to the Child Protection Policy for further guidance.
  • It is essential that all Parent Volunteers are fully aware that confidentiality must be maintained at all times and that it would be inappropriate to discuss matters relating to pupils, staff or other parents in relation to their role as a parent volunteer.

  • Kirkhill pupils are expected to be well behaved and mannerly at all times. However, if a child misbehaves or is cheeky to you during your time as helper, please explain to them that you find their behaviour to be unacceptable andexplain why. Please ensure that you pass on any concerns to Mrs Donaldson, Mrs Menzies or Mrs McRobb prior to leaving the school building.
