The Cathedral is embarking on a major period of fundraising with the aim to raise £20 million for the regeneration of the Cathedral and the Close over the next ten years, alongside this, the Cathedral has an ambition to increase the number of people attending services, increase the number of visitors and through positive engagement deliver high standards of support and care to our congregation, pilgrims and visitors.
The Strategic Vision of Lichfield Cathedral – Key Priorities
  1. Reaching a new public and making new Christians; by 2019 we want to double our visitors and significantly increase our worshipping congregations.
  2. Developing partnerships with the Diocese and Cathedral School across a range of activities, so that the Cathedral plays a key role in the delivery of Diocesan priorities.
  3. Nurturing Christian faith, worship and understanding through learning, exhibitions, events, interpretation of the Cathedral.
  4. Securing city alliances to boost economic activity and the cultural and visitor economy.
  5. Renewing and repairing the Cathedral and Close and giving the Cathedral the facilities and infrastructure for future demands.
  6. Securing the finances for £20 million of development and increasing revenue streams.

Main Job Purpose
To provide support to the Finance Manager in preparing the Cathedral’s Management Accounts, reporting on key financial information, processing day to day transactions and ensuring the smooth running of the Cathedral’s finances.
Principal Areas of Accountability
  • Provide assistance in the creation of the Cathedral’s Management Accounts.
  • Assist in overseeing the income as it is collected, recorded and banked appropriately.
  • Ensure payments are recorded, processed and paid within the Cathedral’s identified parameters.
  • Working with the Cathedral’s accounting software (Sage Line 50).
  • Using the Cathedral’s online banking software (Natwest)

Job Activities
The following activities will be undertaken by the post holder:
  • Assisting with the preparation of monthly Management Accounts
  • Uploading information onto the Cathedral’s Sage Line 50.
  • Uploading invoices and any other payments through Sage Line 50 and Bankline.
  • Assisting with the cash counting from donations and services.
  • Providing advice to the commercial areas regarding cashing up.
  • Assisting with banking and change runs as required.
  • Processing cheques, including banking and recording especially in relation to the Cathedral’s restricted funds.
  • Processing the Cathedral’s Gift Aid and recording against designated funds.
  • Reviewing spreadsheets and other forms of recording information to ensure formulas are correct.
  • Working alongside the staff team to use Purchase Orders.
  • Working with all departments chasing payments.
  • Provide reports and financial information when required.
  • Reviewing Cathedral’s financial policies to ensure financial management is in line with Cathedral procedures.
  • To undertake any other reasonable tasks as directed by the Executive Director or Finance Manager.

Person Specification
Essential
  • Excellent attention to detail
  • Excellent IT skills and knowledge of all Microsoft Office packages, in particular Excel
  • Excellent oral and written skills.
  • Ability to engage with the suppliers and staff in a positive manner.
  • Experience of Sage accounting packages
  • Knowledge of VAT legislation
  • Ability to work as part of a team
Desirable
  • Committed to the Cathedral’s Christian ethos, vision and ministry
  • Working towards/have a professional qualification in accountancy
  • Knowledge of Gift Aid
  • Working within the charity sector.
  • Experience of working with volunteers.
  • Experience of working in complex organisations and/or small organisations with the ability to be adaptable and to take on any challenge at short notice.
  • Experience of working with EPOS systems.
