20 February 2013.

Introduction
ThispublicationpresentstheresultsfromtheACTschoolcensusconductedonWednesday,
20February2013.Thecensuscoverspublic,Catholicandindependentschoolsfrompreschoolto year12.
This publication also presents information on the number of persons of school age who undertaking school equivalent courses through home education or the Canberra Institute of Technology.
Student enrolments2009 to 2013
At February census 2013,therewere68,825studentsenrolledinACTpublicandnon‐governmentschools(Table1), anincreaseof1,289(1.9%)sinceFebruary2012.Theoverallchangeinthenumberofenrolments wasaresultofincreasesof1,070(2.8%)enrolmentsinprimaryschools,207(1.1%)enrolmentsinhigh schools and 13 (3.2%) enrolments in specialist schools. College enrolments remained at similar numbers to 2012 with a decrease of one enrolment.

In2013,therewere40,879studentsenrolledinpublicschools(Table2),an increase of805enrolments(2.0%) since2012.Thisincludedincreasesof714(3.0%)enrolmentsinprimaryschools and 140(1.5%)enrolmentsin highschools,a decrease of 62 (-1.0%)enrolmentsincollegesandan increase of 13 (3.2%) enrolments in specialist schools. Publicschoolsaccountedfor59.4percentofthetotalstudentpopulation.
Theincreaseintotalpublicschoolenrolmentscontinuedthetrendofincreaseseach year since 2009.
Non-government school enrolments increasedby484(1.8%) students compared with 2012.Non‐governmentschoolsrecordedincreasesinenrolments acrossprimaryschoolsof356 (2.6%)students,highschoolsof67(0.7%)studentsandcollege of 61 (1.6%) students.

ThetotalnumberofAboriginalandTorresStraitIslanderenrolmentsinACTschoolsincreasedby100enrolments(6.1%) compared with 2012.Publicschool enrolmentsincreasedby42(3.1%)and non‐government schools enrolments increased by 58 (18.6%). The public sector continued to have the highest proportion of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students with 78.9% of total enrolments of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students. From 2009 to 2013 the number of enrolments of AboriginalandTorresStraitIslander studentsincreased by 418 (31.4%) students to 1,748, with growth across both the public and non‐government sectors.

In2013,thenumberofenrolmentsof studentswithspecialeducationneedsincreasedby241(9.8%)from2012.The numberofenrolmentsof studentswithspecialeducationneedsinpublicschoolsincreasedby145(7.7%).
From 2009 to 2013 the number of enrolments of students with special education needs increased by 496 (22.6%)students to 2,690, with growth across both the public and non‐government sectors.

ACTpublicschoolcensusdatawaselectronicallydownloadedfromtheDirectorate’scentralised administrativesystem.Non‐governmentschoolcensusdatawaselectronicallysubmittedtothe Directorate.
Studentenrolments
Thecensusincludesstudentswhowereofficiallyenrolledinaschooloncensusdayandwhowere activeinaprimary,secondaryorspecialisteducationprogramat thatschool.
