TOWNSHIP OF MENDHAM BOARDS AND COMMITTEES

PLANNING BOARD:

The Planning Board hears subdivision and site plan applications that are

generally in adherence of the township’s land development regulations.

The board also reviews and makes referrals of ordinance and zoning items for the master plan

The Planning Board is made up of a chair, a vice-chair, the mayor, a member of

the township committee, the township administrator, two members, plus two alternates.

The Planning Board meets on the third Wednesday of each month at 7:30 p.m.

ENVIRONMENTAL COMMISSION:

The Environmental Commission conducts research into the use and possible use of the open lands in the township. The commission also makes recommendations to the Planning Board on plans and items for inclusion in the master plan and the development and use of publicly and privately owned open areas. The commission also studies and makes recommendations concerning open space preservation, water resources management, soil and landscaping protection, environmental appearance, marine resources and protection of flora and fauna.

The Environmental Commission consists of two co-chairs, one regular member from the Open Space Commission, four regular members and two alternates.

Environmental Commission meetings are held on the third Monday of each month at 7:30 p.m.

ZONING BOARD OF ADJUSTMENT:

The Board of Adjustment hears development applications that are not in compliance with the zoning regulations. The majority of applications are for variance requests for setbacks on residential properties. The board hears testimony and renders a decision based on the best interest of the township and its residents.

The Zoning Board of Adjustment consists of one chair, one vice-chair three members (four year terms), two Planning Board sub-committee liaisons and two alternates (two year terms).

Zoning Board of Adjustment meetings are held on the second Thursday of every month at 8:00 p.m.

RECREATION COMMISSION:

The Recreation Committee develops and recommends various year round programs and recreational activities for township residents. The committee also develops both short-term and long-range plans with regard to present and future needs. The committee also acts in an advisory capacity to the Township Committee on matters relating to the use and development of open space areas, parkland, trails, and recreational fields for use by the township.

The Recreation Commission consists of a chair (who is also the liaison to Open Space), vice-chair, three members, two alternates and two associates.

The Recreation Commission meetings are held on the first Tuesday of every month at 7:30 p.m.

BOARD OF HEALTH:

The advisory Board of Health provides advice to the Township Council and interfaces with the township’s Health Officer on a monthly basis. The board is charged with recommending measures to meet the health needs of the township and those who come in contact with it. The board also helps protect and promote the public’s health by the use of environmental enforcement and inspections activities through the delivery of state mandated “Public Health Practice Standards of Performance for Local Boards of Health in New Jersey” and through the ordinances and policies of the Board of Health.

The Board of Health consists of a president, a vice-president three members (three year terms) and two alternates (two year terms).

Board of Health meetings are held the fourth Monday of every month at 7:30 p.m.

HISTORIC PRESERVATION:

The Historic Preservation Committee works to ensure the protection, enhancement and preservation of historical, architectural or culturally significant sites and structures within the township. Whenever possible, this includes promoting the use of these sites and structures for the education, welfare, and pleasure of this and future generations of residents of the township and county.

The Historic Preservation Commission consists of a chair (also liaison to Open Space), four members and two alternates.

The Historic Preservation Commission meets the first Wednesday of every month at 7:30 p.m.

OPEN SPACE COMMITTEE:

The Open Space Committee acts in an advisory capacity to the Township Council on matters relating to the use and development of open space areas available within the township.

The committee reviews, plans for and advises the council on the development, redevelopment maintenance, use and control of open space, parkland owned or otherwise available for use by the township. Additionally, it coordinates its activities and cooperates with other committees whose responsibilities are similarly related to the environment, open space and recreation.

The Open Space Committee consists of a chair and 8 regular members, including representatives from the Environmental Commission, Historic Preservation Committee, Recreation Commission and Township Committee, and four members appointed at-large and two alternates, appointed at-large.

The Open Space Committee meets on the first Thursday of every month at 7:00 p.m.

WILDLIFE MANAGEMENT COMMITTEE:

The Wildlife Committee focuses on deer over population, the regulation of hunting in the township and hunting licenses.

The Wildlife Management Committee meets as necessary at various times throughout the year.

The Wildlife committee consists of a chair, and five members all are one year positions.

MENDHAM TV COMMITTEE:

The Mendham TV Committee is a partnership/committee between Mendham Township and Mendham Borough. The stations mission is to produce and air programming to inform, educate and entertain the community. The station also serves as a 24/7 provider of approved messages as well as emergency service notifications.

The Mendham TV board consists of eight members, four of whom are appointed by the Township Committee (the other four members are appointed by Mendham Borough). The Township appointments include a Township Committee representative, the Township Administrator and two residents appointed at-large.

The Mendham TV board meets on the third Thursday of every month at 7:30 a.m.

SUSTAINABLE JERSEY

Sustainable Jersey is a committee committed to exploring ways in which the township can go green while controlling costs and saving money. Sustainability encompasses a range of issues including global warming, pollution, biodiversity, land use, air and water quality, equity, buying local, local living economies, and sustainable agriculture. Sustainable Jersey is committed to protecting resources and systems that support us today so that they will be available to future generations.

The Sustainable Jersey committee meets on the second Wednesday of every month at 7:15 p.m.

The Sustainable Jersey committee consists of a chair and up to nine members.

TREE PROTECTION COMMITTEE:

The Tree Protection Committee consists of a chair and seven members (one year terms).

The Tree Protection Committee meets on the third Thursday of every month at 7:30 p.m.
