High School Registration Timeline

Believe it or not, it is time to get started with the very important process of helping our 8th grade students’ transition to 9th grade! Below is a timeline of important dates families will want to know concerning the registration process. Please take time to make note of important dates on your family calendar. Your student won’t want to miss any of these opportunities!

Step #1: Career Interest Activities: Alleighth grade studentscompleted an interest inventory and developed a list of potential careers in grade 7. Families can access this information on theCareer Cruising website( at home. Students know their login and password. We will continue to work with career exploration activities during Advisory lessons in grade 8.The topics this year look at specific skills and how those relate to jobs, exploring 4 year high school plans based on career clusters and research on college/post-secondary educational options.

Step # 2: Students had the opportunity to go to a broad-based Career Expo at the Interstate Center onOctober 27th This was a good chance to visit with folks working in different career areas and to speak with post-secondary school representatives about programs of study to reach career goals.

Step #3: Students will have the opportunity to participate in the Agricultural Career fair here at PJHS. This event will take place on Thursday, December 1stand is another opportunity to look at employment opportunities and the educational pathways available to reach goals.

Step #4: NCWHS and NCHS Orientation Night: All incoming freshmen and their parents are invited to visit the high school they will be attending next year on Wednesday, December 7th. This is a great opportunity to meet staff, get an overview of high school expectations, and check out the activity fair to see the wide variety of clubs, sports, and activities!!

Step #5: PJHS Counselor Classroom Visit: In December Mrs. Brown and Mrs.Gerrietts will visit 8th grade classrooms to discuss how future goals apply to high school course selection, earning credits for graduation, high school grading systems, and high school basics. Mrs. Brown and Mrs. Gerrietts will visit Lit and Comp classes on the N-team on Friday, December 2nd and the O-team on Thursday, December 8th Counselors will return to classrooms an additional time to answer follow-up questions about freshman scheduling following the HS Counselor visit .

Step #6: High School counselors from both schools will meet with 8thgrade students to discuss course options for next year. A copy of the course description book will be given to studentsand the high school counselors will discuss specifics about required courses and elective options. Students should bring home their course book and a list of freshman course options to review over winter break so families can make decisions about the classes students want to take during their freshman year. High school counselors from both schools will visit the eighth grade students on Thursday, December 15th.

Step #7: Register For 9th Grade Classes: Beginning January 18th, PJHS counselors will meet with students to enter course requests.This process will be done through career cruising. Changes can be made after that time by contacting Mrs. Brown or Mrs. Gerrietts. The deadline to make changes is March 24th. No elective changes will be allowed after that time.

“Planning Beyond the Freshman Year: Parent/Student Night”: Representatives from ISU, IWU and Heartland will join us to discuss what 8th graders need to know about preparing for college admission. This meeting will take place for all 4 middle schools at Kingsley this year – typically in March – date TBD.
