General Rules

1.This Flower Show conforms to the standards established by the National Garden Clubs, Inc. (NGC). The Handbook for Flower Shows, 2017 Edition, with revisions printed in The National Gardener magazine (TNG), is the authority for all issues not covered by the Schedule, which is the Law of the Show

2.Entries are open to members and affiliates of NGC, members and affiliates of GCA, or any amateur floral designer.

3.Entries require advanced registration (see Division rules below).

4.All entries with the appropriate entry tag information must be sent to the Entries Chair, two days prior to exhibiting, in order to be computerized.

5.Entries will be accepted at the Seaport World Trade Center,1 Seaport Lane, Boston, MA.

6.Day One entries will be accepted on Tuesday, March 13, 2018 at 8:30 am to 11 am. Day Two entries will be accepted Friday, March 16, 2018 at 5:30 am to 8:00 am.

7.Day One judging will be Tuesday, March 13, 2018 at 11:30 am. Day Two judging will be Friday, March 16, 2018 at 8:30 am.

8.Day One entries will be removed on Thursday, March 15, 2018 at 8:00 pm. Day Two entries will be removed on Sunday, March 18, 2018 at 6:00 pm.

9.The Classification Chair for each division checks exhibit for conformity to the schedule prior to judging. Final determination for conformance is the judges’ responsibility.

10.The General Chair and Classification Chair for each division are available during judging for possible consultations. They, along with the judges and clerks, are the only personnel allowed on the floor during judging.

11.The decisions of the judges are final. Awards may be withheld if not merited.

12.There must be an emphasis on FRESH plant material. No artificial plant material is permitted.

13.Each exhibitor is limited to one entry per class.

14.GCFM will strive to assure the safety of all items after arrival and placement, but is not responsible for any loss or damage to exhibits.

15.Wild collected plants of species listed by the Massachusetts Natural Heritage Program may not be used. Cultivated plant material may be used if the exhibitor produces a typed card stating that it has not been wild collected. Plants listed on the Massachusetts Prohibited Plant List are not permitted. 16.In accordance with Massachusetts Horticultural Society (MassHort) policy, businesses, non-profit organizations, and commercial products may not be promoted in a design. Logos, corporate images, catalogs, circulars and business cards are prohibited.

Awards

  1. The NGC Standard System of Awarding is used in all divisions:
  2. Only one (1) first-place (blue) ribbon per class; must score 90 points or more.
  3. Only one (1) second-place (red) ribbon per class; must score 85 points or more.
  4. Only one (1) third-place (yellow) ribbon per class; must score 80 points or more.
  5. one or more Honorable Mention (white) ribbon per class; must score 75 points or more.
  6. Top Awards will be presented at an Awards Reception, April 12, 2018, at 7pm, at Elm Bank, Hunnewell Building, 900 Washington Street, Wellesley, MA.

Design Division I Awards

  1. NGC Design Awards. These awards are given, if merited, on each entry day.
  2. The Award of Design Excellence is offered to the highest scoring 95 point or more, blue ribbon winner in the Design Division entered by an individual. It is a rosette of gold ribbons. Classes 102, 103, 104, 105, 106, 107, 109, 110, 111 and 112 are eligible.
  3. The Club Competition Award is offered to the highest scoring 95 point or more, blue ribbon winner in Section A. It is a rosette of light blue ribbons. Class 101 is eligible.
  4. The Petite Award is offered to the highest scoring 95 point or more, blue ribbon winner in Section B. It is a small rosette of blue and white ribbons. Classes 102, 103, and 104 are eligible.
  5. The Table Artistry Award is offered to the highest scoring 95 point or more, blue ribbon winner in Section C. It is a rosette of burgundy ribbons. Classes 105, 106, and 107 are eligible.
  6. The Designer’s Choice Award is eligible for the highest scoring 95 point or more, blue-ribbon winner in Section E. Plant material used in the exhibit may be dried, treated dry, and/or fresh. It is a rosette of purple ribbons. Classes 109, 110, and 111, and 112 are eligible.

    This award, a plaque, may be given for the entry that best exemplifies the sensitive use of color. The recipient need not necessarily be a blue ribbon winner.

    This award, a silver trophy, is given to the entry that is the most original interpretation of the Class theme, and uses an adventurous combination of plant material and components. Entry must score 85 or above. Blue ribbon winner not eligible.

    Recognizes a design of outstanding beauty and creativity in the expression of one designer's imagination. Open to all competitive entries in the Design Division. The recipient need not be a blue ribbon winner.

    Awarded to the blue ribbon entry receiving the highest number of points.
  7. Garden Club of America (GCA) Zone 1 Bowl:
    Presented by member clubs in Northern New England, is awarded, if merited, only once during the show for distinction in the aesthetic arrangement of plant material. The exhibit shall be judged with no reference to a point scale or any previous award.

Youth Division II Exhibits Awards

The NGC Award of Appreciation is offered to exhibits in Section A. It is a rosette of orchid ribbons. Classes 1 and 2 are eligible.

Design Division I - Signs of Spring

Design Rules

1.An Exhibitors’ Meeting will be held on Saturday, January 27, 2018 (snow date, Monday, January 29, 2018) at 10:30 am at Elm Bank, Hunnewell Building, 900 Washington St., Wellesley, MA.

2.The NGC Exhibit Policies are printed in the Handbook for Flower Shows, 2017 Revised Edition, Chapter 7, Exhibiting in the Design Division, NGC Policies and Guidelines.

3.Design entries require advanced registration: Sign-up Genius:

4.Plant material and non-plant material permitted and not permitted are printed in the Handbook for Flower Shows, Chapter 7.

5.All plant material used in the design must be identified on a card, provided by the exhibitor and included in the entry tag.

6.The exhibitor is required to conform to the stated description and limitations of the Design Type if named in a class.

7.Rules for Design Types, Advanced Design Types, Table Designs, and Table Appointments are printed in the Handbook for Flower Shows, Chapter 7.

8.The Scale of Points for Design is listed in Handbook for Flower Shows, Chapter 14.

Section A: Getting Ready

Class 101: Potting Room, Club Competition – Vignette, judged from the front of the 5’ side, viewed 360 degrees. Staging: Exhibit to be staged on the floor, Committee to provide plastic sheet measuring 7’ wide x 5’ deep.

Section B: Take the Little Ones:

Class 102: Make Way for Ducklings, A Design (5”). Eligible for Petite Award. Staging: All 4 Pedestals will be placed on a 6” riser. Each pedestal measures 42” high x 13” round so the final height will be 48” from the ground. (Pedestal color: Benjamin Moore “Sweet Spring” #1500)

Class 103: Frog Pond, Creative Design (8”).Eligible for Petite Award. Staging: 40” high x 14” square. (Pedestal color: Benjamin Moore “Sweet Spring” #1500)

Class 104: Swan Boats, American Traditional Mass Design (12”).Eligible for Petite Award. Staging: Pedestal 36” H with 14” square top on 12” square base. (Pedestal color: Benjamin Moore “Sweet Spring” #1500)

Section C: Festivities

Class 105: St Patrick’s Day, Exhibition Table. Eligible for Table Artistry Award. Staging: Pedestal 36” H x 30” W x17” D, attached backboard 30” W x 40” H. (Pedestal color: Benjamin Moore “Sweet Spring” #1500)

Class 106: Marathon Monday, Alfresco Casual Table for Two, Eligible for Table Artistry Award. Staging: Round table, 30” H x 30” Diameter, Committee to provided a white tablecloth to the floor.

Class 107: Mother’s Day, Tray for One.Eligible for Table Artistry Award. Staging: Committee to provide tray measuring 21.3”W X 14” deep (NOTE: the legs of the tray will be tucked under the tray. So the height of the tray will be 1 3/4”) to be place on square Pedestal 37” high topped with a board measuring 36” W x 20” D.

Section D: Invitations

Class 108: Wedding Shower, (Companion Design) – Buffet Table for Six. Staging: Table measuring 48” round. Committee to provide a cream-colored tablecloth to the floor.

Section E: Traditions

Class 109: Boston Flower and Garden Show, Featured Plant Material Design. Container must be subordinate to plant material. Eligible for Designer’s Choice Award. Staging: Pedestal 36” high with 18” square top. (Pedestal color: Benjamin Moore “Sweet Spring” #1500)

Youth Exhibits Rules

1.The NGC Exhibit Policies are printed in the Handbook for Flower Shows, Chapter 9, exhibiting in the Youth and Sponsored Groups Division, NGC Policies and Guidelines.

2. Youth Exhibits are evaluated using the Design and Botanical Arts Scale of Points.

Class1 Let the Sun Shine In, Design - Reflective Design, Designer’s Choice. Exhibits will be staged on a 6’ buffet table with a white tablecloth to the floor.
