VOLLEYBALL STUDY GUIDE

The Court

- The court in volleyball is 60 feet, divided into 2 halves

- Each team has 6 players on the court at a time

- In men’s games the net is 8 feet high, in women’s games the net is 7 feet 4 ¼ inches high

Serving

- The ball is put into play by serving

- The player in the right-back position is the player who serves

- When serving, the ball must be hit with one hand while keeping both feet fully behind the back line of the court

- When the team receives the ball to serve, which is called a side-out, each player rotates one position clockwise on the court. They will not rotate again until their team loses the serve and then regains it again

When the Ball is in Play

- Each team has 3 hits or less to return the ball over the net

- No player can hit the ball twice in a row. The only exception is that if someone blocks a spike, that touch is not considered as one of the 3 hits and they may immediately play the ball again

- The ball must clearly be batted or hit

- If the ball lands on the line of the court it is considered in-bounds

- You must remain on your half of the court during play. If you step under the net it is considered a foul and the play is over

- You may not touch the net. If you touch the net it is a foul and the other team receives the point

- If a ball hits the net and continues over the net it is still in play

Scoring

- A point is scored on every play regardless of whether or not you serve. This is called RALLY scoring

- The first team to 25 points wins the game

- A team must win by at least 2 points

- Teams change sides after each game

Terms

- Forearm Pass- also known as the bump, it is a pass made off of the forearms. It is most commonly used to play the serve.

- Set- a high pass close to the net so that a player may try to spike the ball into the opponent’s side of the court.

- Serve- the method of putting the ball in play over the net. It must be done by striking the ball with one hand.

- Side-out- a side-out occurs when the serving team fails to win the point

- Carrying- when the ball rests momentarily in the player’s hands. It is illegal.

- Block- a defensive play at the net when a player raises their hands and arms above the net to prevent the ball from returning to their side of the court.

- Point- points are scored when a team fails to return the ball legally to the opponent’s court.
