Where is London?

Use Google maps to show children where London is in relation to Gloucester. Has anyone been there? What is London Like? Look at some of the famous landmarks that can be found in London.

Food and healthy eating. What do we need to stay healthy?

Independently, sort various pictures of food into healthy and unhealthy parts of a lunch box picture.

What is healthy food? What is a balanced diet?

Discuss with the children what a balanced meal is. How can we make sure we are eating the right things? On IWB look at:

Using the Music ‘Chariots of Fire’ by Vangelis, children to begin to think about how the music makes them feel. Have they heard the music before? Do they know what the music is associated with? If they had to move to the music, what would they do?
Show children the opening ceremony from the Beijing Olympic games on YouTube, or look at photos on Google. Explain to the children that they are going to be part of our own Opening Ceremony for the Mini Olympics. Discuss ideas that the children have and begin to build a dance based on the music they have heard.

The Olympic motto is Citius, Altius, Fortius, a Latin expression meaning "Faster, Higher, Stronger". Coubertin's ideals are further expressed in the Olympic creed:
The most important thing in the Olympic Games is not to win but to take part, just as the most important thing in life is not the triumph but the struggle. The essential thing is not to have conquered but to have fought well.[86]
Share the Olympic ideals with the children and discuss how this is important on their life, and how we can relate it to what we do.

In groups, children to talk to each other about different groups that they belong to. Feed back to class and make a list of all the groups that they belong to. Discuss how they feel about belonging to these groups and why they have chosen to be part of these groups.

Children to complete a table showing the similarities and differences between the groups that they belong to, e.g. church clubs, beavers, sports clubs etc.
