SUBMISSION TO THE NRCLTP DRAFT 2012 - 2022

  1. Focus Paihia Community Trust (FPCT) wish to thank and acknowledge the NRC support, via a staff member on the Paihia Masterplan Working Party.
  2. As an overview, it is an aim of Focus Paihia to support and see the Bay of Islands in the top two tourist destinations in New Zealand and at the forefront of ‘must do’ international destinations.
  3. The Trust support NRC focusing on economic development.
  4. The Trust also support the investment in economic development. However, it is noted that the level of job creation and regional economic benefit is currently not detailed enough to ensure that the most regionally strategic town (Paihia) would have some priority on these funds.
  5. There is an opportunity for our town and business community to shift Paihia globally to be a destination of choice by international visitors, thus creating jobs and increasing the dollar going into the regions economy. To achieve this, Paihia will need to improve such things as service, support systems, and infrastructure to become an outstanding destination. Focus Paihia is already working towards these goals, however, recognises that it cannot achieve this alone.
  6. The Trust acknowledge that an organisation needs to be responsible for this new focus, however, requires further information before supporting whether a new organisation be developed over restructuring Enterprise Northland. Dependent on the new structure to be adopted by NRC, we believe there should be representation from both the tourism sector and the Far North district so that towns such as Paihia have a greater chance of receiving investment.
  7. The Trust support that Destination Northland should have a tourism only focus. It fully supports the need to have a promotional agency established in Northland. It is our preference to continue to have this agency in Paihia, the hub of tourism in Northland.
  8. The Masterplan Working Party is undertaking the development of a parking strategy for Paihia. We ask for assistance in development of this strategy, either through financial support or manpower/knowledge sharing.
  9. Need to ensure the ongoing monitoring and improvement of our water quality within the Bay of Islands area.
  10. Yes, the Trust support the need for a sustainable transport system.
  11. The Trust asks for the opportunity to formally present the Masterplan to NRC and seek support in its implementation.
