Step by Step Application Instructions

Stage makeup is intentionally heightened and intensified. The necessity for “unit look” in Sweet Adelines informed our choice of makeup design. Because of the stage lights and the photography lighting, it is necessary for an opaque, almost mask-like application, so that all of our faces look “as one”.

1.  Start with a clean, moisturized face. Let your moisturizer soak in so your base doesn’t “slip off”.

2.  Apply primer, if using.

3.  Using a synthetic foundation brush (it absorbs less and makes your base go further), apply base across the eye area, like a mask. (Apply all your eye makeup and clean up any fallout below your eyes,) then blend the base down you’re your neck, chest and in your ears, (These areas do not need as much coverage as your face). This ensures the same base color for all faces, so the eye makeup looks the same color on everyone.

4.  Using an eyeshadow blender brush, Apply “Phloof”, with a light hand, across the entire lid. Because this color and formulation is so light, bright and iridescent (which can make it photograph very blue), it must be used sparingly, functioning to add dimension on an otherwise entirely dark, classic smokey eye.

5.  Using a smaller, denser eyeshadow brush, apply “Espresso” (the lighter brown) in a V shape, along the upper lash line, at the outer corner and into the crease, so when your eye is open, you can see shadow.

6.  Using the same small, dense brush, go over the Espresso, staying inside the Espresso color, with the darker “Smut” color. This will intensify and ensure the smokey eye look.

7.  Tidy up any stray eye makeup below and beside the eyes with a makeup remover pad.

8.  Fill in brows using your own pencil or powder. Especially after applying base, make sure you have defined visible brows.

9.  Using Black eyeliner, line both upper and lower lash lines, smudging the line and thicker on the outside V closest to your hairline.

10. Apply black mascara or 3-5 layers of Younique.

11. Apply false eyelashes. *Note, if you use professionally applied “permanent” lashes, please ensure they are black.

12. Apply Viva Glam 1 lipstick, making the lips look as full as possible. Lip liner is optional.

13. Blush will be applied by our blushers after you are checked by your makeup captain. All makeup must be done before getting blushed.

The Care and Keeping of your Contest Makeup

1.  Check all supplies for freshness:

a.  Lipstick: usually lipstick will be the first to go. The first clue is it will smell “off”. Nothing to do but replace it. Our M.A.C. lipstick is on the dry side no matter what, so don’t necessarily go by texture (see lip balm tip below).

b.  Base/foundation: If everything is in its original packaging it will stay fresh longer, especially base. But, just because something looks dried out, doesn’t mean it’s to be trashed. You can often add a tiny bit of water to make base makeup usable again. Before you do anything, start working your brush into the makeup. Often it just needs a bit of warming or some working in.

c.  Mascara: unopened mascara keeps for a long time. Opened mascara has a shelf life of about 3-6 months.

d.  Eyeshadow/eyebrow powder: that stuff never dies.

e.  False Eyelashes: some lashes are hardier than others and stand up to cleaning and many, many reuses. Clean using mild/baby shampoo or rubbing alcohol in a spray bottle along with a Q-tip, after you’ve removed the glue. False eyelashes with old glue are very hard to apply, so either clean well or replace.

f.  Eyeliner: use your own black eyeliner, which is smudgeable pencil or gel, not liquid. This lasts a long time and you can check your own for freshness.

2.  Extras

a.  Face Primer: People who have a tendency for base makeup to fade out on them (i.e.: their skin “drinks it in”) can benefit from the use of face primer. I like Benefit Professional the best. Smashbox is also a great Primer.

b.  Eyeshadow Primer: As demonstrated, use the base makeup on eyes to achieve a uniform platform for the eye makeup. You may be able to experiment with eyeshadow primer prior to that base if you find you have oily lids. You’ll notice this if your eyeshadow begins to crease instead of maintaining the smoky, blended look. I like Urban Decay primer potion, but try out a few. Sephora will prep small trial sizes of everything they sell. Just ask.

c.  Lip balm: I recommend prepping lips using a rather waxy lip balm (not too sticky, and not glossy) to maintain a bit of moisture on your lips. Experimentation before contest is a good idea. My favorite is Lip Sugar by Fresh.

d.  Lipstick bleeding: If you have a particular issue with this, you can go to M.A.C. to pick up a matching lip liner. This is an effective way to keep lipstick inside the lines.

e.  Mascara: Put it on before false lashes, so as to keep the falsies as clean as possible.

f.  Brushes: such a good idea, particularly for foundation. I use a synthetic bristle one, as it doesn’t absorb the base. Your makeup will usually go further than if using fingers or sponges. Clean with any makeup cleanser, or gentle soap.

i.  Eyeshadow brushes: also a good idea, in 2 sizes if possible: larger fluffy one for highlighter/Phloof shadow and smaller, dense one for the two darker shades. This ensures more precision of shadow placement.

What to Wear

There are 3 situations to consider when you're packing for contest:

1.  Contest performance, which includes: costume clothing, hair & makeup.

a.  Moxie tunic, jazz pants, (no cuffs), undergarments that minimize lumps and bumps, button earrings, black socks, chorus shoes.

b.  Boots and tights – for front row

c.  No watches or other blingy jewelry

2.  Show of Champions: Winter Palette (Blacks, greys and purples). Button earrings, silver jewelry, and black shoes/boots. Scarves fine as long as within the palette colors. No skin below the waist or bare arms. If wearing stockings please choose opaque versus transparent ones. A date night look out is what you are aiming for!

3.  Rah Rah, & ROTR activities, where you'll need: Sunburst top and denim bottoms. Lip Medallion necklace, bit of silver jewelry. Regular shoes (black is good).

4.  Free time. Wear whatever you like!

Tips and Tricks Wardrobe

a)  Carry on your costume in “carry-on” luggage just in case your checked luggage doesn’t make it!

b)  Do not launder or iron your costume. If necessary, steam it in the bathroom during a hot shower. You can pack it using tissue to minimize wrinkles & protect it.

c)  Lips medallions are highly encouraged.

d)  Please make sure to pack your costume with the sleeves pulled inside prior to folding it, so the sleeves do not snag on the sequins.

e)  If you are not sure of Palette colors, check the ROTR website for details.

f)  Hang your costume when not in use to avoid wrinkles and let it air out!

Tips and Tricks Makeup and Hair

a)  No “Unnatural” hair colors on contest stage. If you are not sure whether this applies to you, please check with the Wardrobe or Makeup chair person.

b)  Bring Makeup remover wipes (any kind) with you. Try not to use the hotel supplied ones (I’m sure we have ruined more than a few over the years!)

c)  Bring your own facecloth with you. Bring a dark one. (Don’t bring a white one, the hotel will take it with the rest of the laundry!)

d)  If you find your base has dried up: consider buying new foundation, dab a drop of water in the foundation and allow to rehydrate.

e)  To make your lashes last, clean after contest with rubbing alcohol to clean the glue off and store in the package.

f)  Makeup (except lashes) *can* go in checked luggage, as makeup can be shared.

g)  Nails: Natural or plain white French tips. No color please.

h)  Hair should be lifted, with a bit of height at the crown. Off the face and framing the face. Please try to show your earrings. Hair is NOT required to be off the shoulder. Try to find a style that suits you and is a bit glamorous!

i)  All hair accessories to be invisible ie: matching hair color, no sparkle.

j)  Vaseline is great to apply on the tops of your teeth just before we get on stage to avoid lips sticking to teeth (in the case of dry mouth) but also so lipstick does not bleed onto teeth.

k)  Review the Contest Makeup Application Video prior to putting on your makeup. The video can be found on Vimeo. Please go to http://www.vimeo.com/rhythmoftherockies/makeuptutorial to view. If you need to log on, use and password Aloha123. The Video name is “ROTR Contest Makeup Tutorial”

l)  Consult the Eye Shape Diagram below to see how to apply eyeshadow to make you look your best! If in doubt, talk to your Captain about what eye shape you are.
