An eye opening public television documentary examines and uncovers the mysteries of

the nation’s foodsupply by tracing the food chain from its origins to our plates.

Owings Mills, MD—Beginning in October, public television audiences across the country will be treated to a revealing documentary that unearthsthe origins of our nation’s food supply as well as its ability to sustain the same food quality and availability for a rapidly expanding American populationover the next ten, twenty, or even thirty years.

“Supermarket Guru,” ABC News reporter and Today Show news editor, Phil Lempert and a group of industry experts illuminate a one-hour public television special that asks and answers the important questions surrounding the nation’s food supply by tracing a simple American breakfast and following its path from farm and factory to table.

Filmed in part at the famous Café Hon in Baltimore, Food Senseexplores the manufacturing and delivery processes behind coffee, sugar, milk, eggs, bacon, orange juice and strawberrieswhile examining the impact of those processes on the environment.

“With the massive recalls of contaminated food, we all need to become more informed to help ensure our food is safe,” said Phillip Guthrie, Director of Station Relations for Maryland Public Television, “Food Sense offers viewers a valuable starting point for somevery important discussionswe should all be having at the dinner table.”

Viewers will be introduced to bothorganic and conventional food production methods and learn about the potential sustainability of each model. Lempert then introduces “locale” growing and production methods and explores the positive environmental impact of buying local produce from Farmer’s Markets.

Finally, we travel to Chicago and New York to uncover the food pricing process. Viewers will be introduced to the important role of the Mercantile Exchange in the food chain and how the staggering cost of packaging, transporting and refrigerating our food supply impacts the environment andfood prices.

“Every consumer has a responsibility,” Lempert explains.“Each one of us has to be as sustainable as possible, understanding what impact we have on the planet.”

Viewers will also be invited to an interactive website with chat boards moderated by Phil Lempert and other industry experts. This site will also link to content on other social media sites including Facebook and Twitter where viewers will be encouraged to continue the national discussion.
