North East Link Lower Plenty Road Explained

Hi I’m Seb, and I’m here to talk about some of the detail at Lower Plenty Road Interchange as part of North East Link Project.

We’re transforming the way people travel around Melbourne with the North East Link.

The new freeway and tunnel that will slash travel times and take thousands of trucks of local streets.

We’ve collected a lot of traffic data to understand where people are travelling to and from.

This has helped us work out what connections we need so that local communities can get the most benefit out of the project.

One of North East Link’s important connections will be a Lower Plenty Road.

We’ve done some early design work to look at how we can make this happen from a traffic and engineering perspective.

Drivers will come out of the tunnel just north of Lower Plenty Road, where the freeway will stay at a lower level in a trench.

From there head north alongside the existing Greensborough Road which will be kept open for local traffic.

There’ll be local connections over the freeway trench which will make it easier for people to get to the shops and Watsonia Station.

The Lower Plenty Road Interchange will improve access for people starting or ending their trips in this area, provide significant relief on north-south arterial roads, reducing volumes to lower than today.

While we’re focused on minimising the impacts to homes and the precious local environment, a project of this size will have some impacts.

We’re talking one-on-one with anyone who is potentially impacted.
And we will continue to do so as we get on and deliver this project.

Further design work will now get underway, and that work will focus on minimising the impacts to the community.

Congestion and traffic will get worse as Melbourne continues to grow.

North East Link will slash travel time between Melbourne’s north, east and southeast by up to 30 minutes and take up to 15,000 trucks off local streets.
