Beginning Your Research

Now that you have your idea set and questions asked, you may begin your research. Notecards help a research stay organized. Use the following method to organize your information on Notecards.

  1. On the top of the notecard, write what you are taking notes on for your research paper.
  2. You will make a list of the sources you are using. Write the number of the source on the card so if necessary you can access the information again at a later time.
  3. Paraphrase the information you learned from the source.
  4. Record the page number where you found the information.

Source List:

List the sources you use on a separate card or piece of paper. This way you can write simply the number of the source on your notecard rather than the whole title. This saves time!!

For example, for a research project on How Animals Communicate:

1) (internet source)

2)Animal Talk: How Animals Communicate through Sight, Sound, and Smell By: Etta Kaner (Book)

3)“Animal Communication” from Encyclopedia Britannica (encyclopedia)

4)“Ravens Appear to Communicate Using Gestures – A First for Non-Primates” DISCOVER (magazine)

Then you simply put the number of the source you used from the list on your notecard! 

To create your notecards, you may use regular notecards or the sheets below:
