Purpose of jobWorking alongside others as part of a team carrying out building projects at Beamish, including deconstruction of buildings, conservation/restoration work and new-build developments. Duties include carrying out labouring tasks to support trades working on site, moving and storing building materials, working as part of the trade team if you hold a relevant skilled trade, maintaining a tidy and safe working areas ensuring compliance with all relevant health and safety legislation and regulations.

Duties and Responsibilities of the Post

  1. Teamwork
  • Work as part of the Remaking Beamish Project Team to ensure the delivery of the Remaking Beamish project, placing visitors at the centre of all activities and planning
  • Support the work of the Building Team as directed by the Buildings Team Leader to providing labour duties for construction trades, subcontractors, construction short term placements and long term apprenticesdelivering buildingconstruction projects.
  • Work closely as part of a team of contractors and staff/volunteersto keep construction areas tidy, assist trades working on site, and ensure construction materials are on hand and safely stored.
  • Help develop the capacity and skills of staff, volunteers and apprentices by taking part in appropriate training and supporting the up skilling of others.
  1. Working on Building Projects
  • To be fully involved with construction and rebuild projects at Beamish and to assist the relevant crafts in delivering the highest standards in the most efficient manner.
  • Work on building projects allocated by the Buildings Team Leader to providing labour to trades working on site.
  • Contributing skilled labour where appropriate and manageable around labouring duties.
  • Operating and cleaning plant machinery including cement mixers.
  • Take responsibility for the mix and timely delivery of both cement and lime mortars to trades working on site.
  • Ensuring the site is kept clean, tidy and free of hazards at all times
  • Working with the Building Team Leader to monitor supplies of building materials and ensure the supply of materials needed by on site trades is not interrupted.
  • Support with the supervision/mentoring of construction apprentices.
  • Ensuring efficient and effective allocation of incoming building materials onto site from external suppliers and Beamish Collections to ensure the timely delivery of materials as needed by building and construction trades.
  1. General Responsibilities
  • Work flexibly to respond to the needs of the Museum and its visitors.
  • Provide assistance to other teams as necessary to ensure the smooth running of projects and activities.
  • Be prepared to work outside normal office working hours to meet the needs of the museum and deliver projects.
  • Carry out the duties of the post in accordance with the Museum’s Equal Opportunity Policy, Code of Conduct and Health and Safety legislation and regulations.
  • Ensure compliance with standing orders, financial regulations, audit and management procedures.
  • Carry out a range of other duties commensurate with the grade and falling within the scope of the post, as requested by management.

Able to work as a member of a team to deliver high quality restoration/building projects
Able to support construction work when required with a broad range of skills gained through recent experience or training e.g. operating/driving plant equipment, Bricklaying, Stone masonry, ground works.
Knowledge and experience of mixing both cement and lime mortars.
Proven experience of maintaining a safe and secure construction sitein accordance with all relevant regulations.
Able to communicate effectively with team members, colleagues and members of the public /
