EXPERIMENT DATA

* Carry out your experiment. You must repeat your experiment with each experimental group in at

least 5 separate trials. This is so that your data will be reliable (reproducible). The more trials you

conduct, the more likely that someone else repeating your experiment will get the same results.

* Make sure that you measure as carefully as you can and use the most precise (smallest) units

possible. This makes your measurement data more accurate (correct/exact).

* Set up your data table(s) as follows:

a) Title your data table. (Independent Variable vs. Dependent Variable)

b) Label the independent variable at the top of the left column. Underneath the independent

variable label, label what changes will be made to the independent variable to test the

hypothesis.

c) Label the dependent variable labels across the top of a data table. The units of the

dependent variable must also be labeled across the top of the data table.

* Systematically record all data in your science project journal. Data should include numerical

measurements, personal observations, photographs, drawings, etc. The date of when the data is

measured or observed should also be recorded.

examples:

DATA TABLE TITLE: THE INDEPENDENT VARIABLE vs. THE DEPENDENT VARIABLE

LABEL WHAT THE INDEPENDENT VARIABLE IS HERE / LABEL WHAT THE DEPENDENT VARIABLE
AND UNITS ARE HERE

If only one measurement for each trial is needed, follow this example:

DATA TABLE TITLE: BRAND OF RUNNING SHOE vs. TIME TO RUN 25 meters

INDEPENDENT VARIABLE:
BRAND OF RUNNING SHOE / DEPENDENT VARIABLE: TIME TO RUN 25 meters
UNIT: seconds (sec.)
TRIAL 1 / TRIAL 2 / TRIAL 3 / TRIAL 4 / TRIAL 5 / TRIAL 6 / AVG.
NIKE (10/12/2000) / 10 sec. / 7 sec. / 9 sec. / 11 sec. / 8 sec. / 8 sec. / 8.8 sec.
REEBOK (10/13/2000) / 9 sec. / 9 sec. / 12 sec. / 10 sec. / 7 sec. / 8 sec. / 9.2 sec.
BAREFOOT (NO SHOES) (10/14/2000) / 11 sec. / 13 sec. / 10 sec. / 14 sec. / 9 sec. / 10 sec. / 11.2 sec.

If more than one measurement for each trial is needed, then follow this example:

DATA TABLE TITLE: BRAND OF FERTILIZER vs. HEIGHT OF BEAN PLANT
