Course Description

Welcome to English 10! Throughout the year, you will be taking a virtual trip around the world where we will read a diverse selection of literature. During the year, we will concentrate on the following areas:

  • Reading, discussing, writing about, and analyzing world literature
  • Learning and implementing newvocabulary words
  • Improving and practicing various types of writing, especially essay writing and revision

As a member of English I0, you will be asked to use your critical thinking skills. For example, you will need to think critically when you challenge assumptions, organize an argument in writing, and analyze the purpose of a piece of literature. Ultimately, it will be these skills that you take with you beyond high school in either a work or academic environment.

Required Texts

Literature textbooks and class set plays will remain in the classroom. You can access the textbook online through my webpage.

  • Elements of Literature – World Literature Anthology (To access online see my webpage)
  • Shakespearean Play- A Midsummer Night’s Dream
  • Fiction Novels/Novella –Anthem, Fahrenheit 451, The Alchemist
  • Nonfiction Memoir- I Have Lived A Thousand Years
  • Independent Reading Novel (must be with you at all times)
  • You are permitted to borrow a book from Ms. Lee’s library and use as your IR novel; however, the book must be returned within a month!

You must bring your novels with you every day to class. If you do not have your novel you are unprepared and a detention will be issued. THERE ARE NO EXCEPTIONS.

The 10th Grade English consumable fee is $20. This fee goes to purchasing 4 of your required texts. Once a text is given to a student it is their responsibility to bring the text to and from class each day. If you lose your text it is also your responsibility to purchase a new one. The fee is due on ______.

Grading/Assessment Policy

Grades will be determined by evaluating the students’ progress in each of the following categories and will be tallied using a weighted system. You may keep track of your grades throughout the year by checking Infinite Campus on a regular basis.

  • Formative: 15%
  • Summative: 65%
  • Quarterly Tests: 20%

**All major assignments completed at home, i.e. essays and projects, must be typed. Students may use the computers at school to type assignments. There is absolutely no excuse if the assignment is not handed in typed. Your assignment will not be collected and considered late.

Homework

Homework will be assigned and checked on a regular basis. It is the students’ responsibility to keep track and turn in all homework assignments. Homework is expected to be turned in on time. If you fail to complete a homework assignment there will be specific consequences. You will receive a homework detention for that day where you will complete the homework, and will receive no credit. Copied homework will also not be tolerated. If you copy a classmate’s homework or let another classmate copy your homework, you will receive a detention for academic dishonesty, no credit for the homework, and are still required to complete the homework. “We worked together on it”, is not an excuse, it is plagiarism.

As part of the Towne Renaissance Incentive Program a student who receives a homework pass because they are in the Blue or Gold Merit Groups is allowed to use their homework pass on a formative homework assignment to avoid being written a detention; however, the homework is due immediately the next day or a detention will be issued. The homework pass MAY NOT be used on annotation checks.

Absence Policy

**Each student is responsible for missed work due to absences. If you are absent your name will be posted on the missed work calendar. All work will be placed in the “missed work folder” located in the classroom. Also, you may only check the folder before school, before or after class, and after school. If you are absent the day a homework is due, you must turn in the homework the next day.

Please note that FTCHS is a college preparation school, therefore, as the year progresses the role of getting missed work will become your responsibility. If absent, it is also in students’ best interest to utilize Ms. Lee’sInfinite Campus page andcalendar. You may also want to familiarize yourself with Towne’s Attendance Policy. If a major typed assignment is due on the day you are absent, it is your responsibility to still turn the assignment in electronically. If you do not turn the assignment in the assignment is considered late.

Late Work

As mentioned above, all homework must be turned in the day upon which it is due. (Unless otherwise discussed during an appointment)

For major assignments, i.e., projects, essays, PBA’s, etc., the following formula will be used:

1 day late = minus 10 points 2 days late = minus 20 points 3 days late = minus 30 points

Beyond three days late, work will no longer be accepted; however, you are still required to complete the assignment with all criteria of credit.

In order to avoid late work, students are encouraged to approach Ms. Leebeforehand and discuss any special circumstances that might make an extension possible. If an assignment is not submitted electronically before school starts it is considered late. If you hand in an assignment during advisory your assignment is late.
