Job title: Development Officer (Major Grants, Trusts & Foundations)
Reporting to:Development Manager
Areas of responsibility:
Under the direction of the Director of Development, reporting to the Development Manager, this role contributes to the effective operation and management of all fundraising and development activity throughout Birmingham Museums Trust.
Accountabilities:
1.Support delivery of Birmingham Museum Trust’s (BMT) Fundraising Strategy maximising income opportunities for the Trust.
2.Assist with the implementation of all aspects of the Charity’s public grants (Birmingham City Council, Arts Council, Heritage Lottery Fund etc), trusts and foundations activity.
Key Responsibilities
- Achieve income targets from public sources, trusts, foundations in accordance with BMT’s Fundraising Strategy and as agreed with the Development Manager.
- Take responsibility for specific applications to public funders, trusts, and foundations as directed by the Development Manager.
- Input into BMT’s revenue and wider fundraising strategy, including the development of cultivation strategies that will deliver maximum income and reflect agreed targets.
- Support major capital project fundraising campaigns with a particular emphasis on raising funds from major grant givers.
- Assist in the management and delivery of funding contracts including grant drawdowns, regular reporting and monitoring compliance with any conditions of funding.
- Organise the delivery of cultivation events such as expert talks, private views, tours and hospitality.
- Assist in all aspects of the management and retention of funders.
- Liaise with BMT teams and individual staff to ensure the effective integration of the fundraising function within BMT.
- Contribute to BMT publications and printed material for fundraising activities including newsletters and mailouts.
- Support the upkeep, quality and accuracy of data on BMT’s CRM system in compliance with BMT requirements and the Data Protection Act.
- Maintain up to date knowledge of new developments, relevant legislation and industry codes of practice on fundraising. Ensure compliance with the Charities Act, Data Protection Act and Institute of Fundraising Codes of Conduct and Best Practice.
- Champion BMT, acting as an ambassador for the organisation at all times.

Person SpecificationEssential Criteria / Desirable Criteria
Qualification / Educated to degree level or equivalent
Experience and Knowledge / Solid experience in fundraising in cultural, museums & heritage, science or charity sectors.
Track record of success, fundraising from the following sources:
- Major trusts & foundations
- Lottery
- Arts Council
- Local Authority
Experience of CRM systems
Skills / Ability to plan and prioritise tasks, achieve deadlines, meet financial targets and manage information effectively
High standard of IT skills in Microsoft Office: Word, Excel, Powerpoint and Publisher
Excellent interpersonal skills, highly developed written communication skills, ability to communicate at all levels clearly and effectively. / Project Management skills.
Aptitude / Natural relationship builder with creative skill and confidence to negotiate effectively to secure grant income for BMT.
Commitment to high professional standards and a high level of donor care
Demonstrable empathy with the aims and objectives and expectations of trusts, foundations, lottery and grant givers / Demonstrable empathy for and interest in museums and the cultural sector
Circumstances / Available to work flexibly, including weekends, evenings and bank holidays and attend fundraising and other events across all sites.
