UsingRemoteDesktopandMappingNetworkDrivesfromOff-Campus

ThisdocumentexplainshowtouseRemoteDesktopandmapnetworkdrivesusingeitherauniversity-managedorpersonally-ownedWindows7computerwhileoff-campus.RemoteDesktopallowsyoutoremotelylogintoyouruniversitycomputerandutilizeresources(softwareandnetworkdrives)asifyouareactuallysittingatthatcomputer.

Mappinganetworkdrivetoyourcomputerallowsyoutoaccessthefilesstoredwithinthosedrives.PleaseworkwithyourITSupportConsultanttodeterminewhichoptionisbestforyou.

RegisterComputerWithPowerUP!

Registeringyourcomputerwiththistoolallowsyoutoremotelyturnonyourcomputerso youareabletoaccessitusingRemoteDesktopConnection.

NOTE:Thisisnotnecessaryif youonlywishtomapnetwork drives.Pleaseskiptothenextsectiontitled“InstallConfigureCiscoVPNClient”.

1.WhilesignedintotheuniversitycomputeryouwillbeusingRemoteDesktopConnectiontoaccess,gototheITSDIYToolssite,clicktheLoginbuttonandloginusing yourHawkIDandpassword.

2.SelecttheToolstabonthetopribbonandclickthegoldPowerUp!header.

3.Alistofall yourcomputerscurrentlyregisteredwithPowerUp!willappear.Ifyourcurrentcomputerisnotinthelist,selectAddcurrentcomputer.

NOTE:Ifyourcurrentcomputerisalreadylisted, youcanusethealarm clock icontotheleftofthecomputernametoremotelyturnonthiscomputerinthefuture.Skiptostep6inthissection.

4.TheSystemInformationwindowwillappear.

a.Description:Enteradescriptionforthecomputeryouareregistering.

b.FullComputerName:enterthecomputernamefollowedby“.iowa.uiowa.edu”withoutquotations.Clickonthebluequestionmarkiconforhelpfindingyourfullcomputername.

c.PhysicalAddress:Enterthephysicaladdressofyourcomputer.Clickthebluequestionmarkiconfordirectionsonfindingthisinformation.

d.ClicktheRegisterbuttontocontinue.

NOTE:PleasecontactyourITSupportConsultantifyouneedhelpfillingoutanyofthesefields.

5.YouwillbereturnedtothemainPowerUp!windowandyourcurrentcomputerwillnowbedisplayedinthelistofregisteredcomputers.

6.Toremotelyturnonyourcomputerinthefuture,repeatsteps1and2.OnceyoureachthemainPowerUp!window,thecurrentstatusofyourcomputerisdisplayed.IfitislistedasOff,clickthealarmclock icontotheleftofthecomputernametoturniton.

7.Youwillbetakentothestatuswindowwhere youcancheckonthestatusof yourcomputertoseeifitisfullypoweredonyetbyclickingCheckStatus.

InstallConfigureCiscoVPNClient

Inordertoaccessuniversityresourcesfromoff-campusyoumusthavetheVPNclientinstalledandbeconnectedtotheIowadomain.Ifyouareusingauniversity-managedcomputer,theCiscoVPNClientshouldalreadybeinstalledforyou(skiptostep3below).Ifyouareusingapersonally-ownedcomputerpleasefollowthestepsbelowtodownload,installandconfiguretheCiscoVPNClient.

1.VisittheITSSoftwareDownloadsiteandsigninusingyourHawkIDandpassword.YoumayneedtospecifytheIowadomainbytypingiowa\beforeyourHawkID.

2.ClickontheCiscoAnyConnectVPNClientlinkandselect AnyConnectforWindowstobegindownloadingtheinstaller.Savetheinstallertoalocationonyourcomputer.Doubleclick thefiletobegintheinstallation.Acceptingalldefaults,followtheinstructionsonthescreenuntiltheinstallationhascompleted.

3.Gotothestartmenu,selectAllPrograms,Ciscofolder,CiscoAnyConnectSecureMobilityClientfolderandselectCiscoAnyConnectSecureMobilityClient.

4.Inthewindowthatappears,entervpn.uiowa.eduandclickConnect.

5.LeavetheGroupdropdownsettoDefault.Enter yourHawkIDandpasswordinthepromptthatappears(donotenteriowa\)andhitOK. YoushouldnowbeconnectedtotheIowadomain.

Option1:RemoteDesktop

WorkwithyourITSupportConsultanttoensureyouareauthorizedtoremotelyaccessyouruniversitycomputer.TheCiscoAnyConnectSecureMobilityClientmustberunningtouseRemoteDesktopConnection.

1.TouseRemoteDesktoptoconnecttoyourofficecomputer,gotothestartmenu,selectAllPrograms,Accessories,RemoteDesktopConnection.

2.IntheRemoteDesktopConnectionwindow,enteryourcomputernamefollowedby.iowa.uiowa.edu.

3.UponclickingConnect,youwillbepromptedtoenteryourHawkIDandpassword.Makesuretoenteriowa\beforeyourHawkID.Awindowwillappearreferencingasecuritycertificate.Select Yestocontinue.Youshouldnowbeloggedintothecomputeryouspecified.

4.If youreceivethefollowingwindowafterhittingConnect,itislikelythatyour universitycomputerisnotpoweredon.PleaserefertothefirstsectioninthisdocumentonusingthePowerUp!tooltoremotelyturnonyourcomputer.

Option2:MapNetworkDrives

Workwith yourITSupportConsultanttoensureyouhavethenecessaryaddressesto yournetworkdrives.TheCiscoAnyConnectSecureMobilityClientmustberunningtomapanetworkdrive.

Youwillneedtorepeatthesestepsafterloggingoutandbackintoyourcomputer.TheCiscoVPNClientalsotimesoutafteracertainperiodofinactivity.Youwillneedtoreestablishthatconnectiontoaccessanynetworkdrivesthathavebeenmapped.

1.TomapNetworkDrives,gotothestartmenuandopenMyComputer.SelectMapnetworkdriveatthetop.

2.TheMapNetworkDrivewindowwillappear.

a.Drive:Fromthedropdownmenuselectanunusedletter,preferablesomethingtowardstheendofthealphabet.

b.Folder:enterthedesiredaddresstotheshareddrivethat you wishtoconnectto.

c.ChecktheboxnexttoConnectusingdifferentcredentials.

d.SelectFinishandenteriowa\HawkIDandyourpasswordwhenprompted.

3.Anewwindowwillappearshowingthecontentsofthedriveyoujustmapped.YoucanaccessthisdriveagainbygoingtoMyComputer.
