SAFFORD SCHOOLS - ATHLETIC DEPARTMENT BY-LAWS
(For sports teams, dance team, cheerleaders and wrestling team mat-maids)
It is the responsibility of each coach to discuss these by-laws with their student/athletes and parents prior to the start of each season.
Athlete’s Code of Conduct:
1.No drinking or possession of alcoholic beverages.
2.No use or possession of tobacco products.
3.No use or possession of drugs or participation in drug trafficking.
- Character and Citizenship - students should avoid any act (including hazing) which reflects discredit on his school, or whose character, citizenship or conduct is such as to reflect such discredit.
Handling of Code Violations: (Each coach is responsible to enforce these rules)
- Any violations of parts 1 through 4 that have been noted shall be reported in writing to the A.D. Violation of any part(s) will result in the following:
- First offense:
- Out of Season:(Monitored through the Athletic Director’s office)
- 40 hours of school/community service. (Exclusive of the 40 hours required for seniors)
- Student must show proof that he/she is drug free at his or her own expense.
- Attendance & participation in an appropriate substance abuse class at the expense of the student.
- During the Season of Sport:(It is the coach’s responsibility to monitor and enforce this suspension.)
- Out for three weeks of competition.
- Student may practice, but are not permitted to play, dress out or travel with the team.
- Attendance & participation in an appropriate substance abuse class at the expense of the student.
Second Offense: Out of season or during season:Loss of eligibility for the school year.
3.Code of Conduct is in effect for all activities all the time (including summer, spring break, Christmas Holiday break, etc.). The likelihood of violations being committed and then discovered weeks or even months after the fact would not change the consequences. A student/athlete would still be responsible as outlined above. If a first offense violation has occurred out of season, but was discovered during the season; the athlete would be permitted to continue play so long as he/she is making daily/weekly progress relative to the consequences for an out of season violation. An in season violation that takes place with less than three weeks of competition remaining would have to serve the balance of the three weeks at the start of the next sport if it is overlapping. (Example: football to basketball, basketball to baseball)
Appeal Process:
- Student/Athletes may appeal dismissal from a team with a written request to the athletic director.
- Appeals will be heard by and acted upon by a board of coaches.
- The Board of Coaches will include the athletic director and all paid position coaches from the school in question.
Leaving a Team:
A student may quit a team prior to the first scheduled contest with no penalty. Quitting or being removed from a team after the first game will make the athlete ineligible for another sport unless the coach of the sport in question gives him/her a written release.
Equipment:All athletes are responsible for safe and prudent care of school issued equipment and gear. The athlete will pay for any lost or unnecessarily damaged equipment. Athletic gear and/or clothing are to be worn during practice, games and matches only. Exceptions for jerseys or sweats on game day are acceptable.
Travel:Athletes are encouraged to stay together as a team. Students will be released to their own parents when the parents approach the coach following a contest or game. In order for a student to be released to someone other than their own parent, they must have prior permission from the principal or athletic director in writing.
Awards:Completion of a season will include attendance at the Post Season Awards Presentation. Athletes failing to attend will forfeit awards, letters or recognition. (Exception: Arrangements made with the coach in advance.)
Fees:Athletic participation fees are non-refundable once a student/athlete participates in a contest. If a refund is granted there will be a twenty percent service charge deducted from refund.
