Dear Parent/Guardian:
Each year public school students across our state take the Minnesota Comprehensive Assessment (MCA). Students in grades 3,4 and 5 will take the MCA in reading and math. Students in grade 5 will also take the Science MCA.
· The MCA math and reading test will be given online at Zanewood Community School between April 4th-April 28th. Specific dates per classroom teacher are posted on our website, and classroom teachers may communicate that as well.

· The Fifth grade online MCA science test will be given between May 2nd-5th
The MCA is considered “high stakes” for schools and students and the results are extremely important. The state monitors whether schools and districts meet certain targets to make sure our students progress toward high standards. These tests are used to measure accountability under federal legislation as part of the Multiple Measurements Rating (MMR), a system approved for our state to measure academic progress.
Tips:
Please help your child do their best by:
· being at school on time.
· making sure your child(ren) get plenty of rest.
· making sure they eat a healthy breakfast.
· talking about the test, reminding them to do their best and to not get discouraged if they don’t know the answer right away. They have the opportunity to review their answers before they complete each section of the test.
Online practice samplers are available for these tests, as are paper copies. The website works with the Firefox browser the best, and is compatible with Safari as well. Chrome is not compatible at this time and an error message will pop up if you use Chrome.

· Once at the above website click on ‘Student Resources’ then Item Samplers.
· Scroll down and click on the green bar under the Reading, Math or Science(5th grade only) where it says ‘View Reading MCA Item Samplers’ or ‘View Math MCA Item Samplers’
· Choose the grade level and click on Item Sampler (the first bar under the title)
· Your name is GUEST and click the blue Start Test Now, then Start Section
· The Blue arrow on the top moves you through the questions. Click on Submit Section when done with each section.
· Our suggestion is you work with your child on these so that you both can have the opportunity to see what the test will look like and what types of questions they will be expected to answer. This may also help ease any concern your child has about the state tests.
