2015 – 2016 Outcome Assessment Report

Mission / Purpose - The mission of the Department of Construction Science and Management graduate program is to offer a comprehensive program of education, scholarly and service activities, consistent with the Mission of Clemson University and the College of Architecture, Arts and Humanities, for the purpose of improving the quality of the construction industry and thus the built environment.

Goals

G 1: Prepare students for graduation or further education.

Student Learning Outcomes/Objectives with Measures, Achievement Targets, Actual Findings and Achievement Summaries and Analyses

O 1: Advanced knowledge of construction management -Upon graduation, students, using sound research methodology, shall be able to analyze and interpret the application of advanced construction management concepts including information and communication technology, risk assessment, ethical considerations and critical thinking for the improvement of the profession.

M 1: Research Project Completion - Students will successfully complete a research project in CSM 8520 or CSM 8890 to the satisfaction of the faculty using a standard assessment form or successfully complete CSM 8910.

Source of Evidence: Thesis or major research project

Achievement Target – 85% of the students will demonstrate that they have mastered advanced knowledge of construction management concepts through their written project by achieving at least a 3.0 out of a possible 5.0 on the form for CSM 8520 or CSM 8890 or pass CSM 8910.

Assessment Findings - 85% of the students demonstrated that they mastered advanced knowledge of construction management concepts through their written research project by achieving at least a 3.0 out of a possible 5.0 on the standard assessment form for CSM 8520 or CSM 8890.

Target Met.

M 2: Oral Presentation of Research Project - Students will successfully orally present their CSM 8520 or 8890 research project to the satisfaction of the faculty utilizing a standard assessment form or present their thesis to the satisfaction of their faculty committee.

Source of Evidence: Presentation, either individual or group

Achievement Target - 90% of the students will demonstrate that they have mastered advanced knowledge of construction management concepts through the oral presentation of their CSM 8520 or 8890 project by receiving at least a 3.0 out of a possible 5.0 on the form or pass the oral presentation of their thesis.

Assessment Findings - 90% of the students demonstrated that they mastered advanced knowledge of construction management concepts through the oral presentation of their CSM 8890 or CSM 8520 project by receiving at least a 3.0 out of a possible 5.0 on the standard assessment form.

Target Met.

M 3: Comprehensive Examinations -Students will successfully complete a written (or oral, if applicable) comprehensive examination.

Source of Evidence: Writing exam to assure certain proficiency level

Achievement Target - 90% of the students will demonstrate that they have mastered advanced knowledge of construction management by passing their comprehensive examination(s).

Assessment Findings - 100% of the students demonstrated that they mastered advanced knowledge of construction management by passing their comprehensive examination.

Target Met.

O 2: Application of advanced construction practices - Upon graduation, students using effective communication skills to solve practical construction problems, shall be able to explain and defend the application of advanced construction practices associated with planning, staffing, scheduling and controlling construction projects.

M 1: Research Project Completion - Students will successfully complete a research project in CSM 8520 or CSM 8890 to the satisfaction of the faculty using a standard assessment form or successfully complete CSM 8910.

Source of Evidence: Senior thesis or culminating major project

Achievement Target - 85% of the students will demonstrate that they have mastered the application of advanced construction management practices through their written project by achieving at least a 3.0 out of a possible 5.0 on the form for CSM 8520 or CSM 8890 or pass 8910.

Assessment Findings - 90% of the students demonstrated that they mastered the application of advanced construction management practices through their written research project by achieving at least a 3.0 out of a possible 5.0 on the standard assessment form for CSM 8520 or CSM 8890.

O 3: Assessment of Construction Best Practices -Upon graduation students, exemplifying professional integrity, shall be able to evaluate construction best practices of effective management of personnel, materials, tools and equipment, cost and time.

M 1: Research Project Completion - Students will successfully complete a research project in CSM 8520 or 8890 to the satisfaction of the faculty using a standard assessment form or successfully complete CSM 8910.

Source of Evidence: Thesis or culminating major project

Achievement Target - 85% of the students will demonstrate that they have mastered the assessment of construction best practices through their written project by achieving at least a 3.0 out of a possible 5.0 on the form for CSM 8520 or CSM 8890 or pass CSM 8910.

Assessment Results - 95% of the students demonstrated that they mastered the assessment of construction best practices through their written research project by achieving at least a 3.0 out of a possible 5.0 on the standard assessment form for CSM 8520 or CSM 8890.
