Memorial Day

On Friday, May 24, 2013, the seniors held a memorial service which included songs, poems, and shared thoughts in honor of the men and women who served this country in the armed forces. Memorial Day is a solemn holiday to honor our war dead as well as to remember the sacrifices of the Wounded Warriors and all those who served our country.

Jim L., a veteran who attends the program, was on the USS Ben Franklin when it was attacked by a kamikaze pilot during World War II. Over 800 of his fellow shipmates died in that attack. Memorial Day is an opportunity to remember and honor all those who made the ultimate sacrifice, as well as Jim, who braved the pacific theatre during World War II.

Jim L. attended a reunion of the remaining sailors of the USS Ben Franklin. The event was featured on the Brian Williams Show.

Memorial Day was also remembered as an opportunity for family gatherings, picnics and parades. At the day program the participants and staff joined in a friendly potato salad making contest on Thursday, May 23. Four teams competed. Each recipe was a little different from the others. Julia V.’s team made a salad with fresh apples chopped in it! Esther R.’s team chose to make theirs without mustard. Alyssa Wilk taste-tested the salads and picked Esther R.’s as her favorite! All the salads were delicious and tasted great with the hamburgers and beans.

The seniors concluded Memorial Day with a film provided by Deborah Slater-the Gaither’s family sang a litany of patriotic and gospel songs. It was a perfect movie to end the Memorial Day celebration.

Country Music Concert

Josh Chidester, Dave Baker and Dave Wilburn entertain the participants.

Dave Wilburn, Dave Baker and newcomer, Josh Chidester gave a rousing country music concert on Wednesday, May 29, 2013. The three played guitars and sang some beautiful old country bluegrass and gospel songs.

Dave Wilburn will be leaving on his annual cross-country trip in September. He will travel across the United States singing in many churches and halls. He will also be receiving awards for his lifelong dedication to writing and singing country songs.

The day program is fortunate to have three such accomplished musicians who so graciously volunteer to perform monthly at the center.

Sharron Jackson plants seeds with the seniors

On Thursday June 8, 2013, Sharron Jackson, a member of the Top Ladies of Distinction, planned and implemented a hands-on planting experience. She purchased seed containers, soil and seeds and assisted the participants in the planting process. Each participant chosethe seeds to plant. There were beans, zinnias, money plant, carrots, onions, lettuce and forget-me-not flowers.

Marina A., an accomplished gardener, carefully plants her seeds.

The seniors watered them and put them in the sun. When they are the correct size, they will plant them in the Secret Garden.

Working with the seeds brought lots of memories back. Some of the seniors talked about their past gardening experiences. The activity was beneficial because it triggered memories and was entertaining for the participants.

Ms. Jackson and the TLOD regularly volunteer at the day program.

Horticulture Therapy Program rescues ‘Secret Garden’

Prince William County’s horticulture therapy program participants under the supervision of Jo Ann Rudydonated their time and talents to the ‘out of control’ Secret Garden. The vegetation had overgrown in some areas; weeds had grown tall in the cracks and daffodils needed cut back. The group came for two mornings and they rolled up their sleeves, donned garden gloves and worked magic. They weeded the spaces between the bricks and swept the patio. They stabilized the planters and cut the spring flowers back.

A view of the garden after the workers finished.

The workers scrubbed the chairs and tables to remove all the winter dirt. They plan on returning to put a layer of mulch around the plants. The group will come back and join the seniors for a picnic lunch in the “Secret Garden.’

Hank C. returns to program and makes plans for garden beds

After a several week hiatus, Hank C. returned to the day program. He plans to dig up the spring bulbs and replace them with summer annuals. With the help of participants, he will put in sunflowers, geraniums, petunias and the seedlings that the seniors planted during a previous activity.

Hank has been a gardener all of his life. He has demonstrated his green thumb. Staff is always seeking his professional advice about gardening problems. He definitely has a green thumb!

The Oldies but Goodies danced for the program on Thursday, June 13, 2013. From left to right; Yon Barker,

Marie Akins, Dot Garland, Wenona, Mathilda Alexander, Teresa McCall and Dianne Vaughn.

Those Dreaded Kidney Stones

Resource: National Kidney Foundation

How can something so small cause so much pain? The very thought of a kidney stone makes us shudder! Kidney stones are abnormal, hard chemical deposit formed inside the kidney. They range in size from a grain of sand to marble size and larger. The stones that manage to travel into the ureter (narrow tube between the kidney and bladder) and become trapped are the ones that cause all the pain. Trapped kidney stones not only cause pain but can cause blockage of urine flow and bleeding from the walls of the urinary tract. They are a common problem that affects 10% of Americans. A study of 40,000 men indicates that a family history of kidney stones significantly increase the risk of stone formation.

Symptoms:

  • Severe pain in your back or side
  • Nausea and vomiting in some cases
  • Frequent urination or the persistent urge to urinate
  • A burning discomfort during urination
  • Urine that is colored pink or tinged with blood

Prevention

  • You can prevent kidney stones by drinking 12 glasses of water a day. This amount of water will dilute your urine and fight stone formation
  • You should also consider drinking less colas, teas, and coffee because they tend to make the urine more concentrated
  • In addition, not getting enough dietary calcium increases the risk of stone formation, even for those people who have no family history of kidney stones.
  • Getting enough calcium is also essential for blood pressure control and bone strength.

Program Information

Money at day program

Please make sure that your loved one does not bring money to the day program. The participants will not have any need for money. It can be easily misplaced or lost.

Names on coats, gloves and hats

Please label all winter apparel with your participant’s name. If there is no identification on the item, it is difficult to identify the correct owner.

Important tip on leaving messages

It is important that when calling the program to report changes in transportation arrangements or attendance status, to call 703-792-4990. That line is the main line for messages. If calls come in after hours, staff will always check that number for messages. During the hours the program is open, that number is always answered. The other numbers are personal lines for staff members, who may be out for the day. They will be checked-but not always in a timely manner.

Morning Snack

Each morning the program participants are given a morning snack around 9:00 am. It is not considered a full meal. Most families give their loved ones a light snack before bringing them to the center.

Some helpful hints:

  • The day program temperature varies. To insure that your senior is comfortable, please send in a sweater. Make sure his or her name is on it. This may be kept at the center.
  • If items from the center such as silverware, bingo chips, books, colored pencils, CDs, and art supplies are inadvertently taken home, please make sure they are returned to the center.
  • Please notify the staff before 9:00am, when your senior will not be in attendance. This will insure proper staff to participant ratioand accurate lunch counts.
  • Please put names on all personal items. The same staff members who greet your loved one in the morning are not the same staff members who send them home in the evening.
  • Please make sure names are on the packages containing personal care supplies.
