3 EXECUTION

3.1 EXAMINATION

3.1.1 Do not begin installation until substrates have been properly prepared

3.1.2 If substrate preparation is the responsibility of another installer, notify Architect of unsatisfactory preparation before proceeding.

3.2 PREPARATION

3.2.1 Clean surfaces thoroughly prior to installation.

3.2.2 Prepare surfaces using the methods recommended by the manufacturer for achieving the best result for the substrate under the project conditions

3.2.3 Stain must only be used on dry concrete that is above grade or on ground that is well-drained. Do not use on damp concrete, concrete slabs on damp ground, or on concrete that will be constantly exposed to moisture.

3.2.4 If recommended by the manufacturer, perform a Moisture Vapor Emission Rate (MVER) test of the concrete or cementitious substrate. The MVER must be less than 5 pounds per 1000 square feet per 24 hours (2.5 kg/100 m2/24 hr) for successful application of LITHOCHROME Chemstain Classic and sealing with SCOFIELD Selectseal Plus.

3.2.5 Protect adjacent surfaces with plastic sheeting during color staining and sealing.

** NOTE TO SPECIFIER ** Select the application requirements to match the finish specified for the project. Delete all others not required.

3.3 APPLICATION

3.3.1 Reactive Concrete Acid Stain: Apply LITHOCHROME Chemstain Classic as recommended by the manufacturer to achieve the color and finish required to match the approved mock-up.

3.3.1.1 Divide surface into small work sections using walls, joint lines, or other stationary features as natural stopping points.

3.3.1.2 For one-color or mixed-color applications, the chemically stained surface should be washed between applications so that the color effect can be evaluated before another coat or color is applied.

3.3.1.3 After Classic has remained on the surface for a minimum of 4 hours, all unreacted Chemstain residue must be neutralized and then removed completely prior to sealing.

3.3.1.4 Clean and neutralize using a solution of baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) and water. Mix 1 pound of baking soda per 5 gallons of water (454 g/19 L), and use to neutralize the residual Chemstain acid. Apply the solution until it stops fizzing.

3.3.1.5 After neutralization, the surface must be rinsed thoroughly with clean water several times to remove soluble salts. While rinsing, lightly abrade the surface using a low-speed floor machine equipped with a white pad to remove any residue and/or weakened surface material.

3.3.1.6 Runoff may stain adjacent areas or harm plants and should be collected by wet-vacuuming or absorbing with an inert material.

3.3.1.7 After rinsing is complete, perform a pH test using litmus paper, pH paper or a properly calibrated surface pH meter to verify that no residual acid is present. A pH value of 7 or higher indicates that all acid has been neutralized. If the tested pH value is below 7 the neutralization step outlined above must be repeated until a pH value of 7 or more is obtained.

3.3.1.8 After completion of neutralization, rinsing, and verification that no acid is present, the stained surface must be tested for cleanliness by wiping the surface with a white cloth. If residue appears on the cloth, additional surface cleaning must be performed.

3.3.1.9 All chemically stained surfaces must be protected from traffic until they are sealed.

3.3.1.10 Apply sealer as recommended by the manufacturer at the rate required to match the mock-up.

3.3.2 Water-Based Concrete Stain: Apply LITHOCHROME Tintura as recommended by the manufacturer to achieve the color and finish required to match the approved mock-up.

3.3.2.1 Apply by brush, roller, HVLP, airless, or pump-spray application. Remove overspray immediately with hot water and industrial detergent. Dried material will be difficult to remove.

3.3.2.2 Stain is designed to penetrate surfaces. If applied heavily over tape, it will crawl and stain under the tape. When tape masking is used, spray application of multiple light coats is recommended.

3.3.2.3 Apply additional coats if required to produce artistic effects required to match the approved mock-up. Allow to dry for at least 12 hours before application of sealer.

3.3.2.4 All chemically stained surfaces must be protected from traffic until they are sealed.

3.3.2.5 Apply sealer as recommended by the manufacturer at the rate required to match the mock-up.

3.3.3 Liquid Dye Concentrate: Apply SCOFIELD Formula One acetone soluble dye as recommended by the manufacturer to achieve the color and finish required to match the approved mock-up.

3.3.3.1 Divide surface into small work sections using walls, joint lines, or other stationary features as natural stopping points.

3.3.3.2 Liquid Dye Concentrate must be mixed with acetone prior to application in accordance with the manufacturer's requirements. Mix at the rate required to match the approved mock-up..

3.3.3.3 Apply Dye mixture may be applied uniformly by brush or pump sprayer.

3.3.3.4 All excess dye remaining on the surface must be removed prior to application of the topcoat or sealer. Remove excess dye with water and mild detergent using an autoscrubber, floor scrubber, or medium stiffness bristle brush.

3.3.3.5 All chemically stained surfaces must be protected from traffic until they are sealed.

3.3.3.6 Apply sealer as recommended by the manufacturer at the rate required to match the mock-up.

3.4 PROTECTION

3.4.1 Protect installed products until completion of project.

3.4.2 Touch-up, repair or replace damaged products before Substantial Completion.
