Civil War Battle Project:

On April 12, 1861 Confederate guns fired on Fort Sumter, a Union fort in South Carolina, and the Civil War began. For four long years the North and the South fought bitterly and by the end of the conflict in 1865 approximately 620,000 soldiers had died, nearly as many as in all other American wars combined. For this project we are going to look at some of the battles in depth.

ASSIGNMENT: You and a partner will profile one battle of the Civil War, design a PowerPoint presentation and poster that illustrates the battle and present your battle to the class. You will be the resident experts on that battle and you will be responsible for teaching the battle to your classmates.

1.  PowerPoint Presentation:

Must include the following requirements:

·  Minimum of TWELVE slides

·  Includes at least SIX visuals

·  Bibliography/ Works Cited Page of at least FOUR sources (MLA format)

Must include the following information:

·  The people involved (generals, forces, number of troops etc)

·  Where the battle occurred (a map might be useful)

·  Timeframe for the battle (how long the battle lasted, what days it occurred etc)

·  What took place (what the battle looked like, what happened, what troops moved where and when they did that etc.)

·  Outcome of the battle (who won, casualties, how did the battle impact the policies of both the Union and the Confederacy, etc.)

·  Effects of the battle (what did the winning side gain? Where did the losing troops go? What happened in the war as a result of this battle?)

2.  Poster illustrating the battle:

Your poster should include an abbreviated (brief) version of the information from your PowerPoint presentation. This poster will be displayed on the back bulletin board in the classroom for other students to view.

3. Presentation

Be ready to present your PowerPoint and poster of your battle to the class. You will be graded not only on your content knowledge of your selected battle but also your public speaking skills (eye contact, volume, etc.)
