Chaucer’s Trading Cards

For this assignment you will be making trading cards of the pilgrims that are mentioned in Geoffrey Chaucer’s The Canterbury Tales. You will be allowed to sign up for a pilgrim of your choice. If for some reason you do not like a pilgrim mentioned in this tale and you would like to trade with someone else – please feel free to do so BUT only if the other person agrees. I would STRONGLY suggest that you think about this overnight before coming to this decision, you never know you may end up liking your pilgrim in the long run.

Follow the steps/directions that are outlined below (rubric to follow instructions):

1)In order to complete the description of the “The Canterbury Tales” Trading Card assignment, you must read “The Prologue” beginning on page 101 of the Glencoe Literature book (Green Book) located in Mrs. Muñoz’s room.

2)Complete the handout, Who’s Who in The Canterbury Tales Prologue: Part I.

Directions for creating your trading card: Come up with a design that expresses something about your tale; its theme, a Pilgrim, a setting, etc. based on the information given in the text(s) researched.

NO "white" space on both sides of the card. Secondly, you cannot just color in the space but every slot must be designed in some creative or artistic manner.

Your card must be in a 3 x 5 size.

Front of Card

On the front of the card, you will draw a picture of the pilgrim, according to the description given by Chaucer. Some pilgrims will be easy to draw, some will not. If for some reason, you end up with a pilgrim that is not easy then do the best that you can, but do be creative as possible as creativity is a big factor of your scoring.

On this same side, be sure to pick out a few of Chaucer's words that indicate something about this Pilgrim. For example, for the merchant you might use " . . . a forking beard / And Motley dress . . ."

Back of Card

On the back, you have to list the Pilgrim's name, position and/or job, social position (feudal, ecclesiastical or professional). You also need to summarize the description given by Chaucer about the person.
