Role of Women in 1930S South and Women Characters in to Kill a Mockingbird

Directions:You are to write a multi-paragraph research paper that shows your findings about the topic of your choice. You will need to make sure you have adequate connections about your research and the DIVERGENT novel. Also, you will need to have in-depth analysis. Do not just re-tell/summarize everything you learned. Please use the rubric as your guide in regards to requirements, sources, etc.

Option 1:Dystopian Fiction

Where is Dystopian Fiction?

Why is their an influx of this type of writing?

Discuss common characteristics found in this type of literature.

How is Divergent different than other Dystopian Literature?

Option 2:Social circles…. Factions (Cliques)

Choosing a faction in DIVERGENT could be viewed as similar to that of choosing friends at school….

Discuss the way people (especially teens) fit into social groups

Do these groups continue throughout life? What are the reasons people choose “groups”? How are CLIQUES similar to the FACTIONS? Why do you think this is “Human Nature”?

Make sure to show research as to why these types of groups are created. Research, maybe a personal example, etc.

Option 3:Designing a Test for entrance into a faction

Summarize the major points of the test: What will the people have to do? How will this show which faction they belong in?

What choices would they have to make and how would these choices tell you which faction they should be assigned?

Write a descriptive essay that explains this test; it should include the setting of the test, at least three scenarios and the timeframe required to complete the exam. Your essay should focus on a test between just 2 factions rather than all 5 and consider the attributes, customs, purpose, and manifesto of both factions.

-What will you do to help them?

-How are these tests similar to aptitude tests?

-Do aptitude tests really work?

Option 4:Government Comparisons

The government in the novel is very unique as is our government.

Use what you’ve read about the government in the novel...there is information in the back of the book as well.

Option 5:Social, Moral, Cultural Decisions

First, make sure you understand social, moral, and cultural influences. Then, make a connection between the novel and today’s society.

How are we/you guided and molded? What helps you make decisions on who you talk to and what you talk about? What guides you in your decision making, being honest/lying, etc.? How does your culture influence you?

Use what you’ve read in the novel...there is information in the back of the book as well and make connections on how we are shaped as people.

~Search how we are shaped and how we are influenced.

~Search how we can change and go our own directions regardless of influences.

Option 6: Compare/Contrast people in our society to people in Divergent

Make sure you understand and research each character that you must find a “twin” for in our society.

Find and research the real person in our society and find connections.

How are they similar? How are they different? How do they mirror one another?

Remember – this is NOT surface level analysis.

Use what you’ve read in the novel...there is information in the back of the book as well and make connections on characters.
