barrier island - body of land that protects a coast from a large body of water

hurricane - tropical cyclone storm, usually over water, with winds over 74 mph

wildcatters - oil seekers that took great risk by drilling in areas not known to have oil

roughnecks - wildcatter’s field hands that worked the oil fields

bedrock - the solid rock underlying unconsolidated surface materials (as soil)

petroleum - the oily liquid found in the upper strata of Earth

gusher – an oil well from which oil flows profusely without being pumped

derrick – a framework over an oil well that allows the drilling machinery

to be raised and lowered

speculator – a person who buys goods, land, property, stocks, etc. in the hope of

selling them at a profit

Progressives - people that called for reforms to improve society and government

suffrage - women’s sufferings such as not having the right to vote

Prohibition - a federal ban on the sale of alcohol

truckpatch - a tiny farm in Texas

liberals - people that take action to solve social problems

conservatives - people that wanted to limit change and keep the old ways

neutral - do not take one side over another

impeachment - the charging of a public official with wrongdoing or a crime

terrorist – a person who uses unlawful violence and intimidation,

especially against civilians, in the pursuit of political aims

advisor – a person who gives advice,

typically someone who is expert in a particular field

Red Cross – an international organization, original duty was to care for those who

were wounded, sick, or homeless in wartime

consumption – the eating, drinking, or ingesting of something

pardon – granted to an individual by the action of a governor or president: releases

the individual from any punishment due for the infraction of the law

Multicultural - mix of many races Hispanic, German, Anglo, etc. of people in one city, town, or region

regulate – control or supervise by means of rules and regulations

unethical – unwilling to adhere to proper rules of conduct

prosperity – a successful, flourishing, or thriving condition

submersible – capable of being immersed in water and continues to functioning
