Abstract: / In Ghana the Spiritual Churches, widely known as African Independent Churches, and more recently as AfricanIndigenousChristianChurches, provide ample evidence of continuities in the indigenous religious roles of women. The author examines two traditional religious functions of Akan women which have been incorporated in the new religious movements, namely the office of priesthood and that of the queen mother. She focuses on the prophetess Grace Tani, who founded the first ever Spiritual Church in Ghana, the Church of the Twelve Apostles, in 1914, and on Hannah, the wife and first queen mother of the prophet Jemisimiham Jehu-Appiah, whose Faith Society, founded in 1919, rapidly developed into the MusamaDiscoChristo Church (MDCC) following Hannah's admission.
