Position Description

Peer Learning ‘Undergraduate’ Managers (PLUMs) are invested in Oxy student engagement with undergraduate research, critical making, and the digital humanities. PLUMs harness their community building skills with hands-on projects and tasks regarding staff management, space organization, communications, and marketing. Peer Learning Managers are expected to develop and maintain a safe, upbeat, and collaborative environment on the peer learning floor during evening drop in hours.

Qualifications

●Ability to maintain and exist in a space that honors differences in gender, race, ethnicity, sexuality, class, religion, language access, mental, and physical ability

●Approachable, sociable, and patient, esp. with different kinds of learners.

●Curiosity to learn skills and subjects outside of one’s comfort zone; ability to have one’s ideas and expertise challenged; self motivated and self-directed learner

●Punctuality, dependability, and ability to follow through with tasks

●Strong communication skills

●Experience with event and program promotion

●Expert familiarity with all social media and communication platforms (i.e. Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Tumblr, Slack, Vine) and Occidental email list-serves

Job Duties

●Welcome and direct students to the correct peer learning services

●Promote peer learning opportunities to the Oxy community

●Maintain cleanliness of work spaces, this includes ensuring there are ample tools for students to work with (white boards, markers, paper, pens etcetera)

●Serve as a liaison between student clubs/organizations and the peer learning team re: (space usage, co-programming, equipment usage)

●Maintain the safety of the peer learning team and all students on the peer learning floor during evening drop-in hours

●Communicate and market the programs and workshops put on by the CDLA throughout the year to the Oxy community

The Peer Learning Floor

The Peer Learning Floor (PLF) is located on the ground floor of Library and encompasses the: Critical Making Studio, O-Mac Lab, Writing Center, and Zone of Proximal Development (non-walled off work spaces). The Peer Learning Floor as a space is open 24/7 to Oxy students and community working groups (Regular Library operating hours). It is an open and vibrant atmosphere providing a place for students to work collaboratively on various projects and assignments. The Peer Learning Floor has drop-in hours for research, subject, and writing advising Sun-Thu from 5-11pm.
