NYPD Abuse of Power

In New York City, there is a split between the New York Police Department and the civilians of New York. The New York Police Department should stand for courtesy, professionalism, and respect as these three words are printed in every police vehicle. However, they lack all of these attributes. They lack courtesy in that they do not care about the civilians, they do not take any explanations and issues tickets even when the violation wasn’t intentional or reasonable. The NYPD lack professionalism, their attitudes are unacceptable. They yell and shout, sometimes almost cursing at New Yorkers, for minor violations. The NYPD definitely do not have respect for New Yorkers, they abuse their identity as a police officer, and they believe they are the law, not law enforcers.

These claims of the NYPD can be easily proven. Take a visit down to New York’s Chinatown in Manhattan. Personal vehicles owned by police officers are parked at their own will all over the area. They are not issue traffic violations because they are granted permission to park wherever they want with a police parking permit. Their fellow traffic enforcers give tickets only to New Yorkers and not the police officers. From this abuse of power, it shows that they lack courtesy, professionalism and respect.

Police officers are giving out tickets even when there are no violations in place. For example, orange envelopes with tickets enclosed are placed on almost all UPS and FedEx trucks. These truck drivers have a specified time limit to double park and deliver their packages to their customers. However, before the time limit is expired, a ticket has already been issued. Another example of tickets being issued when no violation is in place is at parking meters. New Yorkers are issued a ticket once they park their vehicle at an expired meter. Police officers are not even willing to give two minutes for the driver to get out of his or her vehicle to feed the meter. In addressing this matter, we intend to breakdown the various problems creating this division and come up with a solution to this problem we New York’s face everyday
