NEIGHBOURHOOD WATCH QUESTIONNAIRE

Dear friends and fellow resident,

Some of us are considering starting a Neighbourhood Watch Group in this area.

We want to make our neighbourhood a better and safer place to live and we need your support.It would be appreciated if you would take just a few minutes to answer the questions below, or talk together with you about how you feel we can make things better.

Please note that this questionnaire remains the property of the proposed Neighbourhood Watch Group no information contained within this form will be passed on to any organisation other than NHW.

1.Would you or any member of your household support a Neighbourhood Watch Scheme in this area?

2.Would you or any member of your household be prepared to act as a Co-ordinator in such a scheme? This would involve circulating information and acting as a contact between your neighbours and the local Police officer.

3. Would you or any member of your household be prepared to help in delivering newsletters or in any other capacity?

4. If the group became a formal group would you consider standing as an elected officer of the group. Chair – secretary – Treasure?

JOB DESCRIPTIONS AND AIMS OF NEIGHBOURHOOD WATCH

The aims of Neighbourhood Watch are

  • To promote good citizenship and greater public awareness through Neighbourhood watch groups.
  • To increase public participation in the prevention and detection of crime.
  • To help increase community safety and reduce the fear of crime.
  • To improve police/community liaison.

Job description for Residents / members of a Neighbourhood Watch

  • Take precautions to protect your own property i.e. secure building, vehicles, valuables and recording them on etc.
  • Report crime and suspicious activity to the police and the NHW Coordinator
  • Maintain contact with NHW coordinator(s) and keep incident diary up to date
  • Look out for vulnerable neighbours
  • Keep up to date about crime trends. Educate yourself about crime prevention
  • Arrange for neighbours to look after your house whilst away and vice versa
  • Be proactive – work with your neighbours and communicate
  • Know the three neighbours in front, behind and either side of you
  • Display the NHW sticker in your window

Job description for Coordinators / Contact persons of Neighbourhood Watch

  • The same as members job description plus….
  • Be the main contact between the Police and the group
  • Have a regular meeting with dedicated Police Officer sharing crime information.
  • Organise meetings for the Neighbourhood Watch group.
  • Recruit people to cover the neighbourhood in sections.
  • Pass on information received from police to neighbourhoods.
  • Help design Newsletters
  • Distribute Home Security and crime prevention literature
  • Notify the Police if you are no longer able to perform the coordinator role.
  • Attend the quarterly coordinators meetings

Job description for Treasurers and secretaries of Neighbourhood Watch

  • The same as members job description plus….
  • Treasurer Open bank account and maintain good records for the group and report once a year to AGM
  • Secretary to be responsible for taking and circulating minutes and agendas. Upkeep of the groups documents etc.
