CCSS Mathematics Assessment Task

The Collector’s Club Problem #1

Grade Level: 2
Mathematics Domain and Cluster:
Domain: Operations and Algebraic Thinking
Cluster: Represent and solve problems involving addition and subtraction.
Common Core standard(s) being assessed (if the task is intended to assess only one part of the standard, underline that part of the standard):
2.OA.1: Use addition and subtraction within 100 to solve one- and two-step word problems involving situations of adding to, taking from, putting together, taking apart, and comparing, with unknowns in all positions, e.g., by using drawings and equations with a symbol for the unknown number to represent the problem.
Student Materials:
·  The Collector’s Club Assessment (Problem #1)
·  Pencil
·  Hundreds Chart, Number Line, Interlocking Cubes (as needed)
Teacher Materials:
·  none
Directions (for teacher to administer assessment task):
·  Hand out The Collector’s Club Assessment (one per student)
·  Tell students, “If you need to use a hundred chart or interlocking cubes, feel free to use them as needed.”
·  For those students that need the problem read aloud you might want to pull them into a small group.
·  Have students work independently on task.
Prompt:
See attachment.
Correct or Model Answer:
a. 48+23 = ☐
48 +20 = 68
68 +3 = 71 stickers
Teacher Notes:
·  Students can also use number strings or drawings to solve. Drawings as a strategy would not be appropriate to use at the end of the year as it is not efficient or an accurate strategy when the numbers get bigger.
Scoring Guide/Rubric (a score should be awarded for each criterion below)
Criteria (CCSS code) / 0 points / 1 Point / 2 Point
2.OA.1: Use addition and subtraction within 100 to solve one- and two-step word problems involving situations of adding to, taking from, putting together, taking apart, and comparing, with unknowns in all positions, e.g., by using drawings and equations with a symbol for the unknown number to represent the problem. / Student is not able to write an equation, or draw a picture or model, and solves with significant errors. / Student is able to write an equation, draw a picture or model, but solves with minor inaccuracies. / Student is able to write an equation, draw a picture or a model, then solves accurately.

Problem:
Solve the following problems by drawing and using equations.
Several second grade students in Mrs. Thompson’s class decide to start The Collector’s Club. In it, they collect things such as stickers, coins, baseball cards, or seashells.
Sam already had 48 stickers in her collection. Her sister gave her 23 more stickers. How many stickers does she have now?
