Pastoral Care and Counseling Faculty Position

THE VISION OF BETHEL SEMINARY

The passion of Bethel Seminary is to advance the gospel of Jesus Christ among all people in culturally sensitive ways. As a Spirit-empowered, Biblically grounded community of learning, Bethel strives to develop and equip whole and holy persons to serve and lead so that churches and ministry agencies can become all they are called to be and do in the world for the glory of God.

Criteria

  1. A personal, vital, and transforming relationship with Jesus Christ.
  2. A commitment to the common beliefs and values shared by the Bethel community, as articulated in “An Affirmation of Our Faith” and “A Covenant for Life Together at Bethel.”
  3. A commitment to the vision of Bethel Seminary, including an embrace of a vibrant, centrist, irenic evangelicalism.
  4. A commitment to collegiality and integration of one’s discipline with others at Bethel Seminary, particularly as laid out in Bethel’s “Three-Centers” philosophy.
  5. An earned doctorate (Ph.D., Th.D. preferred) in Pastoral Care or a closely related field.
  6. A solid grasp and experience of the discipline and practice of pastoral care and counseling (or pastoral psychology) and related fields coupled with a demonstrated ability to teach entry-level and core Pastoral Care courses effectively at a graduate level.
  7. An orientation to the theory and practice of spiritual and personal formation.
  8. A love for students, including a commitment to mentoring certain students, and nurturing all students’ intellectual development, their ability to grow in their spiritual lives, and their ability to integrate their seminary courses with high levels of professional excellence in Pastoral Care.
  9. An enthusiastic embrace of Bethel Seminary’s commitment to foster growth within a diverse learning community with reference to theological and denominational diversity, as well as to diversity of culture, ethnicity, age, personality style, and gender.
  10. Willingness to join a Baptist General Conference church.
  11. An understanding and appreciation of (a) contemporary needs and issues for leadership in the church and society, and (b) biblically based responses to those issues particularly in the arena of addressing human need and alleviating suffering.
  12. Engagement in the professional academy, including regular participation in conferences, workshops, and professional associations.
  13. Has successfully completed at least one quarter of Clinical Pastoral Education.
  14. A record of scholarly publication, or clear commitment to, and potential for, such pursuits.
  15. Knowledge of, or openness to learn effective adult education practices, including but not limited to the use of a variety of educational resources and methods (technology, mentoring, case studies) and educational venues (traditional classes, distance formats, intensive classes, church-site classes) to enhance the educational experience of students.

ONGOING RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Teach eight courses per academic year (quarter system) in the Center for Spiritual and Personal Formation.
  2. Attend all faculty meetings and other required faculty and student events, serve on faculty committees, and be freely available to students on campus.
  3. Fulfill all other duties spelled out in Bethel’s Faculty Handbook.
  4. Represent Bethel Seminary to prospective students, professional associations, churches, mission agencies, and other groups, as opportunities are available.

KEY WORKING RELATIONSHIPS

The successful candidate will participate in a rich network of collegial working relationships. This individual will report to the Dean of Bethel Seminary, St. Paul and will work closely with faculty colleagues. Beyond this, Bethel Seminary strongly urges interdisciplinary relationships of many different types. In addition, student-faculty relationships inside and outside of class are strongly encouraged.

STARTING DATE: Fall 2008.

SALARY: Commensurate with qualifications and experience.
