BASKETBALL COMPETITION

GAME RULES

  • Squads may contain up to 12 players.
  • Each game is started by a jump ball in the centre circle and begins when the ball is tapped in by one of the players.
  • Players may be substituted at any time on a dead ball.
  • A basket from the field, from outside the arc counts as 3 points, within the arc counts as two points and a basket from the free throw counts as one point.
  • After a basket, the opponents will be given the ball to make a throw in from any point behind the baseline.
  • Zone defence must not be used.
  • Size 6 Basketballs will be used for the U14 Boys competition and size 5’s will be used for U14 Girls.

FOULS

  • A personal foul involves personal contact with an opponent, if this occurs in the act of shooting two free throws are allowed, otherwise it is side line ball to the opposing team.
  • Once a player has 5 personal fouls he/ she will be disqualified from the game.

COACHES AND OFFICIALS

  • Each game will have two referees, assisted by a scorekeeper and a timekeeper.

TOURNAMENT FORMAT

  • Each Super zone is invited to enter one qualifying school to the competition. All teams will play each other once.
  • Games will consist of one period of 12 minutes with a rolling clock.
  • Each team is allowed one 30 second timeout per game. The clock will be stopped for timeouts.
  • The clock will be stopped for all calls in the last 30 seconds of the game.
  • Teams will receive 3 points for a win and 1 point for a loss.
  • In the event of a draw there will be extra time until the first basket is scored.
  • Points will be accrued throughout the competition and the winner will be determined from the highest number of points.
  • If two teams have the same number of points at the end of the competition, the winner will be determined by the winner of the fixture between the two drawing teams.
