Bonjour et Bienvenue!!!

Julia Marshall

French Teacher

ScottCountyHigh School

Welcome to French II! I am very happy that you have decided to continue your study of French and I hope that you are looking forward to this year as much as I am!

Course Objective: This class is designed to build on your understanding of the five major aspects of the language: writing, speaking, reading, listening, and culture. We will do many kinds of activities in order to gain an understanding of this content. If we all work together as a team, we will have a very successful year, and I am looking forward to getting to know each of you better!

Grading

Tests and Quizzes, and Performance Projects

Quizzes will be given weekly and tests every 4 or 5 weeks. Tests will often be in the form of Performance projects. The difference is that you will have more time and resources to complete them. Assessments will count for 60% of your grade.

In Class Assignments

In class assignments may include worksheets, conversations, skits, weekly oral grades, notebook checks, and various other activities. All students are responsible for taking notes and keeping a notebook. This will constitute 15% of your grade.

Homework

Homework will be assigned and checked everyday. It will be checked either for accuracy or for completion. Homework checked for completion will not be able to be made up, as the grade is for effort and your participation in checking and correcting the assignment is crucial to the learning process. Homework checked for accuracy can be turned in the day after it is due for half credit. This will constitute 25% of your grade.

Common Assessment

A common assessment will be given and will count for a significant portion of the quarter in the quarter in which they are given.

Class Expectations

Come prepared. For this class, you will need to purchase a 2 or 3 inch 3 ring binder and at least 5 dividers. You should bring your book, notebook, paper, pencil, etc. with you everyday. I will not grant passes to leave to retrieve any items from your locker. Therefore, if you leave your homework in your locker, it will be counted as a zero. I do ask that you always use a pencil, as we will be doing many corrections. Papers written with gel pens will not be accepted. Class will begin as soon as the bell rings, so be ready to get started! Make sure that you sharpen your pencil, use the restroom, etc., before the bell rings.

Tardiness. It is your responsibility to be on time to class. If you are late to class, you must produce a pass from another teacher in order to be excused. If you know that you will be later than 5 minutes past the bell, you will need prior approval by me in order to be excused. Tardies will be treated according to school policy, and will be enforced strictly and consistently. If you are tardy or unexcused, you will be unable to make up missed assignments.

Attendance. Because of the amount of information that we will cover in class, your attendance is crucial to your success. When you are absent, it is your responsibility to get the information that you missed and to make up any assignments in a timely manner. Tests will be announced well in advance, so if you miss the day before a test, you will be expected to take the test on the scheduled day. Similarly, you will have two days following an absence to make up any missed work. Missed tests need to be taken either before school, after school, or at a mutually convenient time so that you do not miss any other important information during class time. Makeup work can be found on my online classroom.

Leaving Class. All of the class time that we have is important and will be used. There is adequate time between classes to go to your locker, use the restroom, etc. between classes. You will only be able to leave class in the case of an emergency. I will typically not grant passes to go to other teachers classrooms.

Be Respectful

This is a very broad subject. In brief, I expect everyone to be tolerant and respectful of the opinions, feelings, time, and property of others. Though it is not limited to this list, being respectful means:

Being helpful to others

Being tolerant of feelings

Allowing yourself and others to make good use of class time

Doing your own work

Talking in a mature and respectful manner

Taking good care of both classroom and personal property

Doing your assignments, and in a timely manner

Being on time to class

Being tolerant of the religions and customs of other people and cultures

This is your class, and everything that you do determines what kind of year that we will have together. Please remember that I am always available if you need extra help, all you have to do is ask! I hope that everyone is ready to work together and to have a great year!
