SCORING

The panel of judges will represent a cross-section of the industry, including architects, engineers, contractorsand other construction industry experts. There is a total possible score of 100 points.

  1. Complete the enclosed application in full with a $85 entry fee. (5 points)
  1. Include a narrative description (suggested maximum 1,000 words). Why is this project special? What qualifies it for an award? Describe any unique or innovative programs, problems, solutions, etc. (and not the routine things that most projects encounter). Were there any value engineering, quality control, environmental, or personnel matters that were noteworthy? Were there any special scheduling, time or cost considerations? Make sure your innovations are really innovative and not just standard protocol. You are encouraged to include diagrams, graphs, graphics, and embed photos into your narrative in order to illustrate your project challenges. Please include the narrative in an electronic format in Word on the CD with the photographs. JUDGES’ RECOMMENDATION: Keep your narrative clear and concise, but still descriptive of the full construction phase, not just the final outcome. Get to the heart of what made the project noteworthy in the first few paragraphs; emphasizing the problems you encountered and how you solved them. The use of bullet points is appreciated, and using captioned photos to illustrate that narrative is especially helpful to the jury.Including photos that show the obstacles you overcame are also very helpful.(15 points)

3.Complete the separate Project Safety form in this application and include it in the Project Safety section of the entry binder. Place this form as the first page behind the safety tab of the entry. The second page must be the project’s OSHA Form 300. No project that has a safety-related fatality is eligible for an Excellence in Construction Award.

JUDGES’ RECOMMENDATION:If you are proud of your company's safety program, include a brief narrative describing specific safety measures taken on this project and why they ensured a safe work environment. Make sure to identify hazards
and how you mitigated them. Outline the steps you took to keep people safe. We need project-specific safetyinformation, not a description of a company safety program. (25 points)

4.You must provide at least 20 color print photographs of the project in progress and at least 5 of the finished project that are no
larger than 8x10. Include all of the images on disk, Windows format (.tiff, .jpeg, or .eps file format). There must be at least one photo of the finished project that is suitable for print (digital format, 300 dpi). You will be judged using the printed photographs in the binder alone; the digital images will be used for the awards program book and press releases to local media.

JUDGES’ RECOMMENDATION: Include a good selection of printed photographs with captions detailing the work in progress as part of your narrative, as well as before and after shots. The judges especially want to see the transformation take place -- the process, not just the finished project. This will give the judges a better understanding of the scope of your project. The judges do not see the digital photographs. Including plans and graphs is also helpful. (20 points)

5.Provide ABC with a complete list of all subcontractors, suppliers and professionals (bonding, insurance, CPA, etc.) that were involved in the project(s) and include them on the CD in Word or Excel format. Please indicate what each subcontractor did on the project, and include their addresses. We will identify fellow ABC members for you. Projects will be weighted and scored based upon the number of ABC members that were utilized during the project. (10 points)

6.Include any press coverage, promotions, letters from owners, third-party comments, etc. Encourage owners and architects to write letters of support for the project, especially if you don’t have any press.(5 points)

  1. Judge’s choice criteria (extra credit):
  2. Project overcame nearly insurmountable odds, special circumstances or other unique aspects. Points to be awarded at each individual judge’s discretion. (10 points)
  3. Projects that utilize green building practices (that aren’t necessarily going for certification) will have the opportunity for additional points at the jury’s discretion. Highlight all of your green standards – recycling, LEAN, whatever you have in place, even if you’re not submitting in the Sustainable Construction category.(10 points)
