Assistant Coach’s Expectations
One of the most important factors to success in high school football is to havequality assistant coaches. This page is a brief overview of the assistant coaches’expectations.
Characteristics
The most important characteristics the assistant coach should have are loyalty andintegrity. As the head coach, I will remain loyal to every assistant coach. Asprofessionals, I would expect the same. We cannot allow dissension or discord fromoutside forces tear away our ultimate goal: to put our student-athlete in position tobe successful.
While I understand that all coaches will see eye-to-eye, and we
may have conversations behind closed doors, I would ask each coach to keepdisagreements amongst ourselves. I also expect each coach to act with professionalintegrity. Our players will remember how we treated them. In every situation, we must conduct ourselves in a professional manner. One example of this is profanity. The assistant coach will be
asked to use language that is not profane while working with our players.
The next most important characteristic the assistant coach should have is a strongwork ethic. We as coaches must model exactly what we ask our athletes to do. I willwork harder than any assistant coach and would expect all assistants to workharder than those being coached.
During practice, all coaches are expected to be actively engagedand not standing idle. While there are times to be social during the season, practiceis not that time. I would expect each coach to help supervise before and afterpractice. After practice is a good time to have social time we can build relationshipswith our players but during practice it should be all business with fun activities thatmake our business fun.
Finally, the last characteristic the assistant coach needs to possess is an intrinsicmotivation to grow professionally. We must grow in our coaching techniques andour overall football knowledge. We can’t be a stagnant as a staff. Every coach willhave a chance to go to at least two coaching clinics in the winter, spring, or summer.I advise that every assistant take advantage off this great opportunity.
Evaluation
Each coach will have an opportunity to evaluate me as a head coach and evaluatethe direction of the football program. I will also conduct a post-season evaluation.Honest candor would be an expectation with such evaluations. We will have 2-3 offseasonmeetings as a staff to address how we will take our program to the next level.
Time
During the season, we will discuss how we want to utilize our weekends.I will not set times because the system of scouting is unknown, family emergency, family situations may arise, and when the IowaHawkeye’s are playing. Once information becomes known, we will sit down as a group and decide when the besttime to meet. Each coach will be part of the weekend planning session; however, iffamily situations do arise, and the coach has talked to me before hand, he will beexcused, (but will have to meet with me and make up the time when home). Eachcoach will be expected to attend the post-season banquet and any other post season
meetings.
Equipment/Field Prep/Weight room
Each paid coach will be expected to help with uniform and equipment turn-in, fieldprep, and summer weight room. As stated above family emergencies’ will arise andmaking some of these fun events will be missed. We will all sit down and havesummer scheduling meeting before the summer begins to assure that all coaches’schedules try to be met. Knowing that it may not be perfect but we all have a say inwhat is scheduled.
Finally, it is my hope that all assistants including volunteers have the students’ bestinterests in mind. Each coach is valuable (every coach, paid or not). “As ironsharpens iron, so one man sharpens another.”
