3) Research proposal – Please provide a detailed research proposal over the initial five year tenure of the Chair. (no more than 8 single-sided pages of A4). Please include:

a) Objectives – Please provide a five-year plan of research. What significant questions will be addressed? Include hypotheses to be tested and grounds for thinking they merit testing.
b) Background - leading up to proposed work and details of previous work you have undertaken in this field. If one of the applicants is a current Foundation Grant Holder, a progress report on related projects must be included and the relationship between these and the current application must be made clear (see section 10).

4)Lay Summary

  • Please provide a detailed summary of this project in language and style that will be understandable to the non-scientific members of the British Lung FoundationResearch Committee and British Lung Foundation Board of Trustees.
  • Considerable attention should be given to this section. The summary should clearly set out the rationale for the study, the methods to be used, and the anticipated benefits of the research to people with lung disease.
  • It is recommended that you show your summary to local carers and people with lung disease for their comments. Your summary may be placed on the Foundation website as well as used for fundraising and PR purposes should be application be successful.

6) Details of finance requested- The Foundation does not make supplements to the annual payment once monies have been awarded. Applicants are thus advised to make adequate provision below. £85,000 is available per annum for an initial period of 5 years.

a) Staff – It would be advantageous if colleagues were named and their CVs supplied. Salaries must include annual increments and should be calculated from the proposed starting date of the Award. Provision should be made to cover future pay increases at the expected inflation rate. The Foundation does not honour merit awards or pay maternity leave.

b) Expenses - These are for use solely in the research and not for service use. The amount requested should be fully justified and include delivery and miscellaneous costs. Where applicable, it is assumed that ordinary equipment, facilities and materials are available in the laboratory in which the research work is undertaken. The BLF does not normally make provision for researcher travel expenses, but if a travel budget is justifiable and directly relevant to the success of the research programme, please include this with an explanatory note in the project description. Budget to cover travel costs for study participants is allowed. All travel must be standard class only. Requests for publication costs must be justified. The Foundation is not able to make funds available overhead and administrative charges.

•Take all reasonable actions to ensure that the Foundation's contribution and that of any sponsor to the funding of the research is suitably acknowledged in all publications and presentations.

•Inform the Foundation of any forthcoming publications based wholly or partly upon the research funded by the Award at the proof copy stage including papers accepted for publication after the award period has terminated and ensure that two copies are forwarded totheFoundation upon publication.

•Not benefit personally from any equity interests (substantive or by rights, options or otherwise) as a result ofthe commercial exploitation of the research funded by the Foundation.
•Not enter into any arrangements with any commercial enterprise that will, in any way, allow the commercialexploitation of any knowledge gained as a result of the research to be funded without first obtaining theFoundation's authority in writing.

However, if the Host Institution decides not to proceed with theprotection of any patentable intellectual property rights, it will fully co-operate (and ensure that its employeesco-operate) with the Foundation so that the Foundation will have an unreserved and unrestricted right, but nota duty to seek patent protection and the Host Institution will not be entitled to share in any resulting profit orbenefit.
•Accept full responsibility for the management, monitoring and control of all the research work funded as a result of the application and all those staff employed in or involved in any research funded as a result of the application.
